Get A Handle On Knife Making And Stay Sharp
From cutting and marking in the shop, to hunting and camping, to preparing a simple meal, a good knife is indispensable. Mass-produced knives can be found for every budget and use. But custom knives, which are often far more attractive, tend to get expensive very quickly.
Of course, the ultimate custom knife would include a hand-forged and hand-sharpened blade. If you’re not up for the expense and dirty work of such an endeavor, you can still experience the pride of a well-crafted and functional addition to your tool collection. All you need is a knife kit.
Better then expected
I have been wanting to make knives for a long time. So I ordered this last week. When it arrived, I too thought the sheath over sized at first but once I stuck the knife in the sheath it became apparent that the sheath is just the right size. The knife is intended to sit 3/4 of it's length in side the sheath, this means the handle is 1/2 inside the sheath and it is held in by friction and gravity. Once finished the knife fits nicely, though that will depend on the thickness of the scales you use. You will also need to finish the sheath, as it is raw and unfinished. I then proceeded, to add my Cocobolo handle. It is worth noting that even though the instructions say to clamp your scales and drill the holes then glue them on. It is simpler and easier to just glue one side on then drill, and glue the other side on and drill. No need to mess with clamping 3 pieces together with out them slipping around on you. I also would recommend that you use the supplied rivets as rivets and flare the ends. As they do not stick to epoxy at all and will easily work loose on you. Mine did while I was shaping my handle. I simply took the knife over to a bench with a metal plate on top of it and use a ballpeen hammer to spread all 4 ends out enough so that they can not work them selves out of the holes ether way. And unless you want to spend hours and hours sanding all the exposed metal once your are done shaping, you will be left with a satin finish on the handle metal and the mirror finish on the blade itself. On mine this is not to noticeable since I worked my way down to 800 grit on the metal and then use a gloss lacquer.
Nice blade / no instructions
Order a kit without the sheath since this one does not fit at all. Very generic and oversized. Need instructions on how to finish rivets. Think I will go with screws next time.
