wood grain switches directions causing planes to tear out grain. Sand paper can dull the finish. and scraping has been done for hundreds of years, it has just gotten easier.

Veritas Scraper Holder
While it's not difficult to hold a metal scraper in your hand, I decided I wanted to try this item to see how it works. Quite frankly, the thumbscrew adjustment does a much better job of controlling the curve then my hand does, it's easier to change the angle - and it's easier to hang on to. A wonderful product, in my opinion.
