Its the old Craftsman drill press

There is nothing new about this drill press. It is the old Craftsman radial drill press design from 20 years ago. I know, because I own one. Always had problems with the quill lock, and had to re-thread most of the knobs and handles. Spindle bearings are okay, but the head moves even when locked into place for vertical drilling. Difficult to tighten the adjustments for repeatable accuracy. It is a poor design with a new color and Rikon branding. There are better drill press models with nicer, updated features. I am a 30+ year experienced woodworker and professional model builder. The drill press still runs, but for accuracy and easy adjustment, this is not the machine to spend your money on. I would not recommend it. The radial head is not well supported, and it vibrates due to the stamped steel belt case. Keeping the motor tight can be frustrating at times.

        Nice product

Ordered the drill press through the local Woodcraft store. Assembly went quickly. Only small flaw was where the (4) bolts that hold the column to the base. The fillet blend would not allow the bolts to seat properly. A little work with a file easily addressed the issue. The belt was tight with the motor pulled all of the way forward, but I always replace the belts with Link-Belts anyway, so no real problem. The spindle and chuck run very true (make sure all the seating surfaces are very clean). I had a bunch of holes to drill in at an angle and this press made it easy to set up and run them through. Really like the longer spindle travel and the versatility of the machine. I am going to build a press table and a mobile cabinet stand as it does use up a little more area than a standard drill press. Except for the few minor things, I am very happy with the product.

        [...]

I'm giving this tool a rating of 3 for a few reasons. 1) The table adjustment worm gears have way to much back lash (almost 3/4 of a turn) as well as the handle seems a bit cheap. 2)Quite a bit of spindle drift when feeding the bit. (I think this can be tightened up a bit but that may cause the feed assemble to bind). 3) The depth indicator doesn't stay put. The good things are that it was well packed and preserved and other than the fit of a few parts it's made quite well made, good heavy castings and structure. A quite and very smooth motor. With a 5/8 chuck there should be nothing that I wont be able to uses. 6 speeds also allows this tool to be used as a drum sanders. All in all I'm satified.
