    Not quite what I wanted

This knife is more for marking than carving. It has a 1/8 inch thick blade, way to thick for even big roughing work. I give it three stars because it would be a great marking knife.

    Roughing Knife

I got this knife from a woodworking store in R ockville Maryland about 9 to 10 years ago. It is a wonderful knife. It holds it's edge even through crazy grain crotch wood that I work with alot. I have a regular sheeps foot bench knife and this and a few chip carving knives....this knife will do all that you ask of it... wonderful piece of craftsmanship I use Pfeil often but not for everything...they make excellent tools...can't go wrong with a Pfeil

Superb steel, still as good as old ones

My dad always used this type of knife for marking out joinery, so that's what I grew up with. I got my own Pfeil when I was 14 and used it for about 30 years. Then all my tools were stolen. One of the first things I had to replace was this knife. I sure am happy they still make 'em as good as they used to. The blade tapers evenly on both sides so you can mark either side of any joint, especially narrow-pin dovetails. The short stout blade is plenty long & skinny enough to get inside narrow tails but it is so stiff it never wanders off line. The taper helps hold it in place against any straight-edge or wood joint. The flat sides keep it from rolling off the bench. I find this style of handle much more comfortable and SAFE to use. The shape allows light or firm pressure with good control. All woodworkers know about the legendary Swiss steel. Problem is nowadays, lots of people market stuff as "Swiss" steel when it ain't. Pfeil is the real deal with real Swiss steel. It takes as fine an edge as you can put on it and holds it for a long long time. Heck, this thing is so good, I might even try carving with it sometime! ;-)
