    Waste of money!

I bought this for my table top sander, and drill press to collect the saw dusts from both of them on my new cabinet top! The dust still collects in my vacuum cleaner anyway! Did a test with a new vacuum filter and cleaned out my vacuum cleaner container.... did the test and a lot of the saw dust made it to the vacuum cleaner! This was a waste of money! I have built my own dust collector for my table saw and it is 200% better than this waste of money! Say your money and build your own collector!!!!

    Great Investment

I bought this and followed the installation instructions for a standard 5 gallon bucket and lid. Hardware, sealant and bucket under $10. I mounted the bucket to a wheeled plant stand, $15. The wheels add mobility and the extra weight adds stability. Now I can leave the shop vac in the corner and roll this around from station to station. Much simpler, quieter, and fewer filters used. It's payed for itself already in under a year.

    Works as advertised. Great product.

Mounted the unit on a piece of scrap AC plywood, cut to fit inside a 31 gallon galvanized trash can. Used an old serpentine belt from the Jeep glued to the plywood as a sealing gasket, grooved edge out, towards the can. Made a gasket from gasket stock for differentials to go between the plywood and the Deputy. Sealed on the plywood side with RTV sealant. Works perfectly! The galvanized trash can will "oil can" a little bit when it gets bogged down, but it pops right back when you turn the vacuum off. No more shoveling shavings after a planing session!

    Help keeping it up

Many people have mounted the DD to a table top. The way I found to do it was to get a second bucket and screw that to the wood box I built to encase my shop vac and lessen the noise. After you have a mobile and strong surface, insert the DD into the second bucket and you no longer have to worry about it tipping over, provided that your table is stable.

    awesome piece of equipment

I recently installed the dust deputy on a 55 gallon barrel and hooked up to my shop vacuum and after using my jointer and planer I had over 1/2 barrel of sawdust and absolutely no sawdust in the vacuum it was awesome

    Works like a champ

This is not for the heavy duty user - it is too small. But it is excellent for folk's like me with a small shop with only one machine hooked up at a time with only a simple shop vacuum of some sort (I use a little 5 gal ShopVac). The combination of a Dust Deputy and the ShopVac does a really nice job for me (using 2-1/2" hose). Everything goes through the Dust Deputy and very little ever gets to the ShopVac. It takes the big stuff, the small stuff and just fills up the plastic paint bucket. I built mine into a 'tower' with wheels and the ShopVac on the top. Move it around and connect the hose. It is a bit difficult pulling the pail out to empty it and I am still working on a fool proof way to keep the hoses on the input side (slippery plastic) but other than that, I am a happy camper.

    Great

This Dust Deputy is wonderful. I works great to keep my shop cleaner. It eliminates the need to frequently clean the filter in the shop vac. I can work all day and only need to dump the contents once a day. Love Love Love...it.....!!!

    Awesome tool

Mounted this on top of my wet dry vac and hooked it up with some DWV PVC and no hub couplings.my setup makes it very mobile I can move it from tool to tool with ease.performed my own test , emptied my vac and sucked up 3 to 4 gallons of sawdust and checked the vac again.there was no sawdust to be found.GREAT TOOL!!

    Amazing solution

Great value at bargain price - I was dubious, but bought a 5 gal pail and top at my big box store, hooked it up in 2 minutes and was completely surprised with the improvement in my shop vac suction without a clogged filter anymore. Just make a 3 to 3.5 inch hole in the pail top and bolt top and dust deputy together. Hooked it in to my planer and it was very impressive seeing its vortex action. I am planning a combo cart to house it with the vac because it readily tips over . My workaround was putting a drill press vice (about 5 lbs and heaviest small item I could do without for awhile) into the pail, so that it now strands up to the hose movement without tipping.

    Absolutely Amazing!

Used the Dust Deputy with a Ridgid WD1450 through the fine bag, HEPA5 filter and muffler. Removed over 700 sf of tile and thinset. NO DUST! The DD captured all the chips and dust with barely any dust in the vacuum. Had a pro use it when he ground the surface smooth- he was so impressed he charged me half if I would give him the DD setup. Everyone who saw it in action now wants one, including the new-floor installers.

This looks like the one I've built

As far as I can tell, This unit uses the same cyclone geometry as one that I've built. Mine cost me approx. $150 in materials alone and took about 2 weeks to build. These things REALLY work. You will not need to clean vacuum filter for VERY MANY hours if you set one up.

    Dust Deputy Arrests Dust

What a great device. I make powder horns and belt sand them with a 60 grit and 400 grit belt. After 6 horns, the shop vac filter is totally clogged. I used the Cyclone for the month of March and when I cleaned the shop vac filter at the end of the month, it looked like I had only used it on one or two horns. This is great, wish I would have bought one of these years ago. It was pretty easy to mount it to a metal can I already had. Spent more time going to the hardware store to purchase bolts and silicone than actually putting it together. Great item, wholeheartedly recommend.

Don't use too powerful a vacuum source!

Like all small cyclones, this one is only for use with low-power (2 and less hp) vacuums. Any more powerful unit will simply suck the dust from the inlet port straight to the outlet port, and you'll still end up with all the dust in your shop vac and its filter.

    Great Product

I easily attached the dust cylclone to a 35 gallon plastic container and I bought the shop vac brand hoses 2.5 inch hoses to connect to the cyclone. The cyclone was sealed to the container lid with permatec silicone sealent and the rest is history. I wish I had bought this soonerand I will be buying another one in the future. Also there was no perceivable dust getting to my shop vac.

  21. 4.0 out of 5 stars

    Works well but overpriced

The dust-deputy does remove most of the dust particles before they reach the dust collector. The plastic is heavy enough to support the vucuum even when the lines are blocked. It does have some distortions in the plastic base from mass production, but these did level out once bolted down to a plywood top, but may not if using a simple plastic lid. Be sure you plan on building a heavy base or attaching everything to the dust collector. The device and bucket are so light that the weight of the hoses will cause it to tip over frequently if you do not.

    Great dust cyclone

I have the DD hooked to a small shop vacuum. It is so efficent that a new filter in the shop vac still looks new after several uses. The ports are tapered to allow various size hoses to be used. I wish that Oneida would include the copper grounding tape with even the basic DD as that would make grounding it easier. Still a great product!

    keeps my garage shop cleaner

I built one of the carts I saw on Woodsmith Shop to hold my shop vac and the dust deputy. I also added a vacuum switch because I knew if it wasn't automatic, I wouldn't use it. The cart and the vacuum switch work great. I should have less cleanup to do in the garage.

    Very highly recommended!

This product goes between the source of dust and your shop vac. It is my poor-man's version of a stationary shop dust collection system. I attach it to my power tools and use it to vacuum my shop floor. This product does what is to me an amazing job of collecting dust. I keep looking inside my shop vac for dust and it takes a close inspection to see any there. Before adding this product, my shop vac filter would quickly clog up, necessitating removal of the filter and a messy cleaning of the dust from the filter. At the same time I added this product, I switched out my filter for one that traps smaller particles, a HEPA filter. With such an efficient particle trapping filter, I would have needed to clean the filter even more frequently to keep up the suction. But with the cyclone, I can go a very long time between filter cleanings. Even then, there is barely any dust on the filter. When the cyclone is attached to a collection bucket such as a 5-gallon paint or drywall container, it is a bit top-heavy. You need to attach it to your shop vac by some means if you want the cyclone roll around with your vac. The manufacturer has some suggested ways to do this such as with a bungee cord or by an auxiliary platform. I highly recommend this product.

why did't i get one of these sooner?

I used to be stingy about using my festool shop vac for anything other than collecting dust from my sanders, because I didn't want to fill up the bag. Now I don't have to be. But best of all, with the bag not choking up with dust, I have far better suction.

    Works Great

I attached it to a 5 gallon bucket with a wooden spacer and some caulk. It's very effective at keeping most of the sawdust out of the shop vac filter. The plastic bucket tends to tip over, but I'm going to fix that by putting an old brake disk in the bottom.

  32. 2.0 out of 5 stars

    Not what I expected

The capacity of this unit is insufficient for the amount of sawdust I generate. The unit is too small in diameter and too short to effectively remove dust from the air. Static electricity buildup also prevents dust from falling into catch bin, resulting in significant blow-by to my vacuum cleaner.

I moved the wheels out 1 1/2 from the side of the 5 gal.bucket using to half lap joint in the center on a peace of 3/4"x 1 1/2" plywood. you'll need 2- 3/4" X 1 1/2" X 15 1/2", be sure to cut the bottom flanges so the bucket well seal good

Doesn't trap most very fine dust

I've been using this for close to a year now in my shop connected to various power tools. It does a good job of picking up just about everything (99%) except the very fine dust, which stays in the air because it is so light. Consequently, the filter on my shop vac stills gets clogged up pretty quick, just like before, with the fine stuff. It's the 1% that gets through that's the problem.

    Works Incredibly Well

I added a 1/2" plywood base with some wheels. I attached it to a 5 gallon bucket, reinforcing the lid on top and bottom with 1/2" plywood circle that extends as far as possible. After using for several weeks on a project, the 5 gallon bucket was 3/4 full, and dust didn't cover the entire bottom of the shop vac. This is after clogging filter after filter when using it without the dust deputy. Great product.

    This dang thing really works

Once mounted, this contraption works like a Dyson vac to spool away all the dust and debris from the tool into the bucket below. I saw it on a few online videos, and the thing seemed to work well. In real life with a shop vac, it really does work well! Virtually nothing ended up in the shop vac. I've planed a bunch of boards and there's still nothing in the shop vac. I ran it with the jointer, nothing in the vac. I chewed through some dusty fir on the table saw, nothing in the vac. I cleaned up the work area afterward, still nothing. A couple nagging issues that I can get over pretty easy. I would have liked to receive a gasket with the DIY kit. As it was, I just used some gasket maker goop, works well... The port that connects to the shop vac didn't really fit my particular shop vac (A Shop Vac) very well. So I wrapped the spout in blue tape and it fits snug now. A little more taper on this spout would have solved it.

  45. 4.0 out of 5 stars

    Overpriced but...

The dust deputy works as well as advertised but just like many others have said that's a lot of money for some molded plastic. I bought the DIY due to price plus I like to customIze for my tastes. The molded plastic unit I received is not flat on the bottom so silicone was necessary, especially when trying to fit it to plywood even with a gasket. In as much as I probably spent just as much with the DIY as I would have with the whole kit I think I have a better finished product by buying higher quality materials than what others have said comes with the deluxe version. Plus it's customized for my purposes which is what so many seem to have done regardless. Good product, overpriced, not real high quality plastic so be careful with it. Will keep you from clogging your shop vac so in about 2 years it will pay for itself by saving bags & HEPA filters.

    Works great

I am very happy to have it connected to my shop vacuum to save my bags. It is pleasant to see the cyclone in action to know it is working. I did have some problems connecting the hoses. The fittings seemes an odd size as compared to the vacuum and hoses I have. I finally settled on flexible plumping couplings and it is working very well. Makes me want to make more sawdust just to watch it work.

    a bit top heavy

top heavy and awkward to use with a standard lengh hose. I overcame this by building a deep square box that is weighted down and on wheels for mobility. Also there was no hardware at all with the diy kit,so you have to provide that and I also cut braces from ply wood as the plastic mounting flange looks pretty thin to be tightening bolts against.

A product that performs as described

I cleaned up my shop vac before I installed the Dust Deputy because I wanted to see if the hype was correct about "99% capture". Well, in my hurry to get going, I forgot to put the filter back in the shop vac. I bet I ran that vac for 20 minutes before I found the filter laying on the table. There was no dust in the air at all. Now after replacing the filter and a full day of sanding, routing, planing, etc, the shop vac is still empty and sucking hard enough to collapse the sides of the 5 gallon bucket I have under the Dust Deputy. Very impressive!

    DIY Dust Deputy Cyclone

Works better than expected. I use it with a 16 gallon shop vac with bag filter. It greatly improves shop-vac filter life, so suction performance is maintained very well. It is also easier to empty the bucket than to replace shop vac filters. You will need: - Bucket: Plastic bucket with lid works well. I suggest you make a bucket-top reinforcing ring from 1/2 plywood, as the full vacuum is developed on the bucket. - RTV Sealant: (to seal the flange to bucket-top joint during assembly). The flange is typical of polypropylene molded products - slightly warped. Using flat washers with fasteners is recommended. - Hose or plastic pipe to connect between cyclone and shop-vac: Standard 2-1/4" shop vac hose will slip-fit adequately to top of cyclone. You may wish to seal it with plastic electrician tape. 1-1/2" ABS plastic pipe fittings will adapt to the cyclone (cement not required). Applying a few layers of plastic electrical tape to the OD of a 1-1/2" ABS plastic pipe fitting will adapt adequately to a typical shop-vac inlet. Use tape instead of cement to seal any take-down joints. Operation: Works best with higher air flow rates. Suggest 2-1/4" hose when possible, but 1-1/4 shop vac hose will work when using sanders with dust collection port. You can improve performance when using a random orbit sander by making a leaky connection to the sander to keep air velocity high.

Picked up the DIY Dust Deputy when I was in Dallas, Tx. Set it up when I got home to S.D., I am so impressed by it I am getting one for my son-in law. Works perfectly

I bought the DIY kit, then spent another $10-$12 on nuts, bolts, washers, a gasket and a 5 gallon bucket from HD with a top. The top had its own rubber seal which definately helps keep the suction in check. I got everything set up and it works just as it did in the videos. I dont know why some people had problems with this unit unless they didnt have a good seal either in the top of the bucket or in the hose connections. I would say that their claim of 99% dust capture is right on. I would highly recommend this product to others. Just make sure to set it up the way the directions indicate and it should work great for you.

I've used this for over a year now and it still works as advertised. To decrease my shop vac footprint and to facilitate easier movement I mounted it to the top of my shop vac. Definitely worth the money!

This is a must item for your shop

I do not have a loss in suction anymore. The filter is always at top effeciency and the dust is trapped in the cyclone container. Great product

    It works!

I'm a sculptor and work with a variety of materials. I just started carving a large piece of lime stone, and the cyclone did as advertized! All the dust ended up in the bucket and not in the vac. I hope this continues! We'll see

    Works very much like advertized

I mounted this to the top of a galvanized trash can. Used silicon to make the seal on the mounting. Sealed the trash can lid with duct tape. Used 2x1 1/2 rubber pipe coupling with clamps to attach to the unit with a 2 1/2" vacuum hose, these are a perfect fit at a cost of about [$] each. I first tested it by emptying my shop vac, about 3 gal. of dust. A few minute particles made it back to the shop vac but that was it. Then hooked it up to my router table and i was very pleased with the results. Shop vac filter didn't need cleaning and vac kept its power. I would recomend this set up to anyone. The trash can is a plus over a 5 gal bucket as it needs less emptying which gives me more time working cleanly.

    Exceeds expectations

The collector works well with all dust, including paint chips wood dust and dirt. This allows me to not clog my filter and save vacuum bags. I bought just the separator and not the entire kit but it was simple to get it working. I created a 3/8 inch plywood top for my 5gallon bucket and routed a 1/4 deep channel to allow the bucket rim to inset and seal. Suction holds it on well. I have used it with the Festool 33 vacuum and the Fein II both with Hepa filters. Especially helpful in cleaning construction debris.

    Great Product--Just Add Ingenuity

The Oneida Dust Deputy is a great purchase. It's easy to hook up and very efficient in use. I don't have to empty my shop-vac and clean the filter (ugh!) nearly as often. Regular plastic five-gallon lids from the hardware store seem a little flimsy under this kind of suction, plus they're a pain to remove. I recommend either Oneida's heavier duty lid or making a sturdier homemade version. The Dust Deputy must be mounted securely or the vac hoses will pull it right over, perhaps damaging it. This is a great product, it just needs a little owner ingenuity to make it work its best.

    Superb product.

I use this with a planer and joiner and it keeps up very well using a good shop vac.

Excellent product, use it all the time.

I have a little trouble keeping the hose attached while using the Dust Deputy, otherwise it works very well.

    Incredible device

I'm amazed by how well this type of system works. Almost nothing gets into my shop vac; I will never need to empty it, literally. As a result, the suction remains constant and powerful. The only downside is that the combination of tubes/bucket/vac makes moving around a little clumsy. That said, I'll never go back to non-cyclone vacuuming.

The cyclone is a fascinating bit of kit

I have mounted the cyclone on an old dust bin and connected to a household vacuum cleaner in my workshop. I use it primarily to collect shavings from an electric handplaner and a Router. I am delighted with the results and the bin is much easier to empty.
