Turning touch ups
I used this to rework some turned box lids. It works well for light work and it is not intended for initial lathe work.
Check the Max rpm
rough finish on the face, should be machined. Product is supplied with short pins, too short for most bowls unless pinched from the inside, not safe for thin turnings. Max rpm stamped is 900, slow for finishing. Good product for lightweight turnings.
Works exceptionally well
Woodcraft should have told me i needed to buy an additional chuck so i would not need to keep changing out jaws
Rough, a little crooked, could be better
After mounting these on my new Nova G3 Chuck they were cockeyed and almost looked like fan blades. After shuffling them around a little I got two of them to sit flat next to each other and the other 2 have about 1/16" step from edge to edge. The first time I used them I didn't think about the finish on them. Or the lack of one. The bowl I tried to chuck up for some reason or other had a good 1/4" run-out. When I took it off to try repositioning the jaws and looked at the finish on top of the bowl, the serface of the jaws had put scratches all over it. (I lost a good hour having to rework the finish on it) And I hadn't even put it under any work load yet. To fix the jaws it took an hour with the air angle grinder with a 2" floppy sanding disc then a scotch brite disc to smooth off the rough cast finish on them. After that I then put a double layer of masking tape over them. I should have done this before I tried to use them. I suggest getting an extra chuck to mount these on and use it only for these. It takes a lot of time to change the jaws and these need to be honed on the back to get them to sit flat. One nice thing is they have enough sets of holes for the pins for different diameters, that from the smallest to the largest diameter there isn't any gaps in what they will hold. The set that I tried from PSI only had 3 sets of holes leaving gaps in what diameters they would hold. This made those almost useless and I sent them back and got these. Overall for the quality of these, or lack of, they are way over priced. If the backs had been machined where they match the master hard jaws of the chuck and the face of them machined instead of the rough casting serface, then they would be worth what they cost. But if you need them and you cant make your own then its these or do without.
Great addition to Nova Chuck
Provides a lot of flexibility in finishing bowl backs - works as described.
Much Needed Tool
A must-need for bowl turning, and so many other projects.
Nice workmanship. An absolute necessary item to have when turning bowls.
