The original “Lignum vitae” (Guaiacum) is Latin for “wood of life”, and derives from its medicinal resin used to treat a variety of medical conditions from coughs to arthritis, and chips of the wood can also be used to brew a tea. Lignum vitae is one of the numerous durable, hard, and dense woods referred to as ironwood. On the Janka Scale of Hardness, which measures hardness of woods, lignum vitae ranks highest of the trade woods, registering at 4500 lbf.

I MAKE PENS FOR A HOBBY AND THIS WORKS SOOO MUCH BETTER THAN THE GOUGE I WAS USING. NO MORE SHARPENING!! I HAD TWO OF THE SAME GOUGES, EXCELLENT QUALITY, BUT WORKING WITH VERY HARD WOODS ALL OF THE TIME KEPT ONE IN THE STORE FOR SHARPENING MOST OF THE TIME. NO MORE! I ALWAYS KEEP AN EXTRA BLADE ON HAND IN CASE OF NEED. I CAN USUALLY GET THREE TO FOUR PENS COMPLETE BEFORE ROTATING THE BLADE TO A NEW SPOT. EASY TO TELL WHEN ITS DULL, JUST DOES NOT CUT ANY MORE. ONE CAUTION, WHEN ITS SHARP - MOVE REALLY SLOW, OR IT WILL GRAB YOUR PIECE AND 'CRACK'!! BECASUE OF ITS SHARPNESS, FINISHES ARE REALLY NICE, SO IT CUTS DOWN THE SANDING TIME.
Impressive finish, even on acrylic
I really enjoy turning pens and have done well over 100. I have always had a tough time with acrylic blanks. I could never really get them smooth and they always required a lot of sanding. A lot of sanding on acrylics usually results in uneven blanks, or scratch marks I simply cannot remove. Those days are gone since getting this tool. With some practice, I was able to get blanks amazingly smooth and even. After turning, I was able to start with 2400 grit micromesh. I was simply amazed at the finish product. There will be a lot more acrylics in my future.
Saved my bowl turning experience
It really is a snap to use for turning the inside of small bowls--I never could get the hang of using a bowl gouge without catches.
The PERFECT Tool!!!
Wow and Wow. The price initally scared me, however, I would not do without it now. The cutting and finishing capabilities of these are awesome. I bought the Mid Finisher as well and am completely happy. Great for Mini, Small Medium and Big projects.
Truly useful tool!
This series of tools is wonderful! I was impressed right off the bat and continue to be so. They have become my new favorite tools. The only caveats are you need to be careful with endgrain and watch for vibration at the maximum extent of the tools.
Wonderful turning tool-
I love this turning tool...it not only finishes well but is the perfect size for some of my detail work on bagpipes as well. Perfect to finsh the drones on my bagpipes. Notice the work at the top of the drone using the ci3...
I used it to turn my first four bowls! Easy to learn and easier to use!
awsome tool. works great on acrylics and small turnings.
This is the only tool I use, from start to finish on pen blanks.
Can't beat it - no sharpening!!!! Great tool.
work great for pens
Best acrylic finishing tool ever
I use the Ci3 to do the finish turning on my pen blanks. It works especially well on the acrylic blanks. Very smooth cutting.
I cannot sharpen tools to save my life! The carbide cutter never needs sharpening, and keeps its edge even when I accidentally hit a metal bushing on my mandrel. I've made over 50 pens so far, and have not had to move the cutting edge to a sharper area. This is an excellent tool, easy to use and is a great investment for your workshop!
Great for Masters & Beginners
Terrific and compact! You don't have to worry about sharpening as the tips are replaceable, but I just rotate them a tad and off I go. Great for pen turning, bottle stoppers and many other small to medium woodturning projects.
