good quality and value
knives good quality and very sharp. hard to get out of wood slots and also hard to put back in.

good for the money but not world class
I really like the variety of gouges and that it comes with it's own sharpening device the case is nice for storage the only draw back of course is having to change the blades but this is pretty easy to do for a adult I wouldn't let a young kid change the blades because if they don't get the blade in right they can hurt themselves.

Super for lino cuts!
I am a print maker and use the tools mainly to carve lino blocks for prints. They are excellent for this. The tools also work acceptably for carving shina plywood blocks for relief prints, but not as well as wood block carving tools.

"Easy to use and well worth the cost"
I enjoy this little set and agree that changing the blades can get a little old but for the money it's well worth it. Even if you are not a beginner you can have this set in your carving kit. I use it everytime I carve. I recommend it to anyone who is starting out fresh or is a longtime carver. The plus for me is space. You can store it away easily.

great beginners set
very nice set for begineers. Of course you always want more specialty tools.

Sharp but tedious and odd-feeling
After lots of ads, I thought I'd try the start set. I have mixed views. I usually use full-sized tools for walnut, cherry, and basswood carving in the round and relief carving. These tools bend a lot in comparison and generally feel weird, even when used as palm tools. Since they bend it's hard to apply pressure and still control the blade angle. The longer handle is supposed to be a mallet handle, but has a plastic insert. It's clear that the blades cut into the insert and handle, eventually ruining it. This is not a mallet set, despite appearances. The tools are certainly sharp, but no moreso that any others I have. The other drawback is you spent more time and hand energy changing blades than carving. I prefer using full-sized tools, with each ready to go as soon as you pick it up. This one-handle-many-blades thing is for the birds. I love the heck out of the carving knife, though. Great feel. This set is probably good for a budget beginner with a lot of patience and interest in going beyond whittling. These are best used for small palm carvings.
