Butternut (Juglans cinera), sometimes referred to as white walnut, oil-nut, is a straight grained, coarse textured wood with medium brown to dark brown heartwood, sometimes with a reddish tint. Butternut is closely related to Black Walnut. While the difference is not black and white, the wood of Butternut is considerably lighter-colored than Black Walnut, as well as being very soft and lightweight. Great carving wood when accenting the grain in the carving. Some common uses for Butternut include: veneer, carving, furniture, interior trim, boxes, and crates.
