Christmastime is one of those perfect times of the year to make someone a special handmade gift. So I took to the shop after Thanksgiving, stepping away from my lathe and decided to do something different. With my daughter Maddy’s growing interest in baking, I decided to make her a heirloom Recipe Box as a Christmas gift. I purchased a Bubinga board about 6 ft.in length x 11″ wide x 3/4″ thick from Woodcraft. It had such beautiful figured grain and sort of a pink-brown color to it, perfect for my 16 year old. It has been a number of years (about 35!) since I’ve done any flat work, back in my Boardman High School days in Ohio, learning under the tutelage of Mr. Haug, my woodshop instructor.
just a FYI
Larry Brusso is my grandfather, and has passed away. His design and hard work shows in all his products. the screws everyone is talking about are NOT the ones he use to sell with the hinges. A company bought out Larry and Faye brusso years ago and has cut cost by replacing his high quality screws with low end cheep brass. you will be happy to know he was very detail driven, and would turn in his grave to know the company that bought him out is cutting corners. I hope you all enjoy his vision and namaste
The very best on the market for quality
I would only use this product to enhance the value of my best chests
Brusso hinges can't be beat
Great hinges for small-to-medium sized boxes. I used these on a jewelry case for one of our granddaughters. Very heavy brass, very high price tag.
Brusso is the best
used these on four jewelry boxes made as gifts for girls in the family. Really dressed up the boxes. Will likely outlast the wood.
YES! I will buy these hinges again
Made with percision
More than I expected
This hinge is way more than I expected! It's heavy, durable and easy to install. I used a very sharp chisel to make mortises and then an Exacto knife to clean them up and wound up with a beautifully mortised set. I paid attention to detail and wound up with a stunning gift and a "Wow factor" that's off the chart. I'm buying a couple more sets of these hinges "just to have for futute projects".
Nervous but relieved
I was nervous about buying these. Another reviewer said the screws are weak. After fitting the hinges and predrilling the screw holes they worked just fine. They have lasted through 2 fitting runs, final box sanding and now final finishing. They have added a nice finishing touch to the 8 gift boxes I have made for Christmas gifts.
Very good overpriced hinges
I bought 2 pair of these hinges. They are well made but I feel [$] is a bit overpriced for what you get. The brass screws are also entirely too soft and very easily stripped or broken...even with an almost oversized pilot hole being drilled.I used steel screws to initially fit them and they went in fine...but when I was ready to replace them with the brass screws 2 out of 8 broke. Brusso needs to make some stronger steel screws and brass plate them.
although expensive, the hinges are of excellent manufacture and design, and do the job they are designed for very well
Exactly what I wanted
This simple hinge is perfect for keepsake boxes, small jewelry boxes and other light duty. The relatively deep mortise adds extra support to this stop hinge, making the whole product more durable.
Good hinges, brass screws are so-so.
Good looking, quality hinges. I have used dozens on small jewelry boxes and pistol cases. Close inletting is neccessary, accurate alignment of top and bottom critical. Brass screws too weak for really hard woods, even with pilot holes.
Brusso Large Box Hinges
The best box hinges I've found.
Good product - Good service
They are Good Hinges, What Else Can You Say
Well made jewelry box hinges
In that I am a beginner woodworker, I learned how to install these hinges by watching Doug Stowe's DVD video "Basic Box Making". Ed
The best hinges made
These are the best hinges for use in making boxes. They hold the lid open vertically. Well made hinges - thick for their size. The brass screw heads are easy to strip out, so be sure to use steel screws the same size to get things started and then install the brass screws as you finish your project.
