There are better choices.
Since this marking gauge has pins rather than a blade for scoring your marks it does not travel across the grain well. A gauge with a blade would work better for such tasks since it would actually sever the fibers of the wood. Also, the size of the fence allows the gauge to move around while marking if you are not deliberate. It just takes more time to mark carefully. The price is right if you just want something for tinkering around, but for a few dollars more you could buy a product that would more easily provide accurate and precise markings.
