Details
The Red Mallee Burl (Eucalyptus oleosa, E. socialis) is prized for its vibrant color and heavy concentration of burl eyes. Mallee trees are scrubland vegetation that is common in many parts of Australia and has dozens of varieties. The trees are prolific producers of burl growths that can be harvested without cutting down the tree, which is why you normally see Australian burls in cap form. Burl caps are flat on one side, exposing the heart and sap wood but the outer rounded side is bumpy or jagged with the bark edge.
