Details

African Walnut (Lovoa trichilioides) has golden yellow to reddish brown heartwood, which sometimes contains darker streaks and veins. The color tends to darken with age and when exposed to UV light. The sapwood is a medium yellow to light gray and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood. African Walnut may also display ribbon-stripe figuring on quartersawn surfaces, similar to Sapele. It is generally easy to work with both hand and machine tools, and turns, glues and finishes well.

Although Lovoa trichilioides is commonly called “African Walnut,” it is not related to true walnuts in the Juglans genus, but is more closely related to Mahogany, being in the Meliaceae family.
