    Details

Mr. Tasai hand hammers and laminates these chisels utilizing wrought iron and a special high-carbon Yasuki blue steel, which is ideal for use when working North American hardwoods. Each chisel is individually heat treated, tempered to Rc65-66, and then hand hammered to increase strength and durability. Handles are finest quality Japanese Red Oak double hooped for mallet use, with a blade length 2-1/2" and an overall length of 9-1/4". Leather scabbard is included.

Mr. Tasai began his training at age of 13 during a time when it was customary for chisel blacksmiths to begin training at age 16. He opened his first workshop on his father-in-law’s farm at age 21, but he had difficulty finding a store to buy his tools. At this time he began making Damascus Chisels, becoming the first blacksmith in Sanjo to offer such chisels. Mr. Tasai decided his Damascus pattern would emulate the annual rings of a cedar tree when cut across the grain. This is a very distinct and beautiful pattern executed with great care so that each chisel is a unique work of art. Mr. Tasai continues to make chisels the same way he did when he first started out, and he considers his knowledge to be one of his most prized possessions. Mr. Tasai’s son Mitio, a Master Swordsmith, has begun to study his father’s technique. It is hoped that this knowledge will be passed from father to son so these fine chisels will be available for the next generation.
