Bandsaw boxes are one of those woodworking projects that look complex, but once you learn the basic process, they’re fun, approachable, and endlessly customizable. In this video, Alex Snodgrass demonstrates how to make a classic bandsaw box using simple cuts and a straightforward glue-up process. Whether you're new to woodworking or you've been in the shop for years, this project is a great way to grow your confidence and practice control on the bandsaw.
The build begins by cutting the exterior profile of the box from a solid block of wood. After that, the back is sliced off and set aside, allowing the interior cuts to be made to form the drawer cavity. The drawer itself is shaped from the material removed from the center, then glued and fitted back into the box body. Once everything is reassembled and the back is reattached, the magic of the form starts to appear — a seamless, functional drawer hidden within a sculptural wooden block.
One of the things that makes bandsaw boxes so rewarding is the sheer number of possibilities. You can experiment with hardwoods, laminated glue-ups, contrasting pull shapes, or flowing organic lines. Each box develops its own personality, and no two are alike. They make great handmade gifts, display pieces, and shop-building projects for improving accuracy and control with curves and tight-radius cuts.
