Hang Your Projects Cleanly with a Keyhole Slot
When it comes to wall-mounted projects like peg racks, keeping fasteners hidden is key to a clean, professional look. Instead of driving screws through the front and risking damage to your project’s finish, consider using a keyhole slot. This simple yet effective mounting method lets you hang your piece securely while keeping hardware out of sight.
A keyhole slot allows the head of a screw to slide into a larger opening, then lock into place with a tight fit. It’s a clever way to mount wall organizers, picture frames or shelving without visible fasteners. All it takes is a plunge router, a key hole bit and a few simple accessories to get the job done right.
Use a Key Hole Bit and Router Jig for Precision
To cut clean and consistent keyhole slots, a specialized key hole bit is essential. This bit creates the two-level opening needed to accommodate the screw head while leaving a snug channel for the screw shaft. Pair your router with a guide bushing and a shop-made jig for accurate and repeatable results.
In the video above, Chad demonstrates how to build and use a basic router jig. It’s just a piece of plywood or MDF with a routed slot sized to match your guide bushing. The jig clamps to your workpiece and keeps your router bit moving along the correct path. With your layout lines marked and your jig in place, plunge the router, slide it along the slot, then back it out. The result is a clean keyhole slot that’s ready to hang.
Make Wall Mounting Projects Easier
With a little planning and the right setup, mounting your next project doesn’t have to compromise your craftsmanship. A cleanly cut keyhole slot gives your work a floating, finished look without visible screws.
