Stop Drawers from Falling with This Simple DIY Drawer Stop Trick

If you've ever had a drawer tip out and spill its contents all over the floor, you're not alone. Fortunately, there's a quick, affordable solution that works for dressers, cabinets and workbenches alike. James Hoy shared a clever method using a small butt hinge to create an effective drawer stop—no special tools or hardware needed.

Install a Dresser Drawer Stopper in Minutes

This trick involves attaching a standard butt hinge to the rear edge of the drawer rail. Position the hinge so the barrel extends slightly above the bottom edge of the rail. When the drawer is pulled out, the hinge catches and prevents it from sliding completely free. It’s a simple yet highly effective way to create a drawer pull out stop that’s easy to install and easy to remove.

Before driving the screws, drill pilot holes to prevent wood splitting. And when working with brass screws, hand-driving them is best to avoid breakage. Once installed, the hinge acts as a dresser drawer stopper, keeping drawers secure even at full extension. To remove the drawer, just lift the hinge barrel and slide it out.

A Reliable Drawer Stop for Cabinets, Chests and More

Pull out drawer stoppers work just as well in shop furniture as they do in home furniture. Whether you're outfitting your workbench, tool chest or kitchen cabinets, this simple DIY solution provides a reliable drawer stop block that won’t damage your drawers or require a big investment.
