Southwestern Bowl

Turn a Southwestern Bowl as featured in Fine Woodworking: Students will turn a 6-inch diameter mahogany bowl with details normally seen in southwestern pottery. The final bowl shape will be left up to each student; however, the fine details will need to be included as shown in the original design. Minor measurements locating the detailed elements can be made to ease the overall turning experience. As included in all turning classes, lathe safety, speed control and tool sharpening will be covered. This intense class will cover the basics of turning and allow for ample time spent with hands on tools. From lathe safety to choosing the appropriate turning tool, your instructor will guide you through the proper techniques and procedures needed to produce beautifully turned works of art. With over 20 years of experience teaching, the instructor will carefully guide students through the completion of several projects meant to help recall the skills learned and apply them to future projects at home. Intro to Pen Turning 101

In this hands-on class, students will receive expert instruction while making two pens: Typically a Wall Street II twist pen and a Slim-Line two-piece pen. Students will begin by learning lathe safety and operation, followed by tool orientation. The instructor will teach students how to prepare the blanks for mounting and turning. This includes selecting, sawing, drilling, inserting brass tubes and milling the ends for flatness. The turning and finishing steps will be followed by pen assembly.
