MANAGER'S STORY OF LATE -
One of the many priviliges of being around a Woodcraft store as often as I am is seeing some of the amazing work our customers and staff share with us. I often hear about these projects at their inception as customers mull over what materials they will use, and get updates as the project moves along. The suspense builds, and I create a mental image of what the project will look like from the information I have gathered over the course of weeks and sometimes months. Needless to say that there was nothing Woodcraft customer Mike Bigler could have said to prepare me for this. He walked into the store with his guitar, and my jaw dropped. He laid it out on a table and as I stared in amazement he asked me "Do you think I'm going to go to hell for this?" After a moment of thought, I replied "I don't know Mike, you'd look pretty funny playing that in heaven."

MANAGER'S STORY OF LATE -
“I can not continue to live like this” my wife announced. And to further clarify her overall position on the subject, she pointed an angry finger at me and ordered “Do something about it.” I had to admit she was right. Our children’s toys were out of control, the corner of our living room looked like a twister had destroyed Santa’s workshop, and I had a sneaking suspicion the toys were procreating while we slept, breeding new toys that added to the mass seemingly out of nowhere. Something had to be done indeed.
So I set out to build a toy chest, and after a few sketches and some searching for plans, inspiration struck. Why does a toy chest need to look like a toy chest? Whatever I build is going to reside in the nicest room of our house, among our nicest furniture, why not make it fit in? That’s it! My kids will have the nicest toy chest east of the Mississippi, and when the chest is closed we will have a handsome piece of furniture on display! No, two pieces! Matching chests, one for each of them! Besides, I reasoned, Daddy runs the local Woodcraft and needs to occasionally justify the very many square feet of basement dedicated to the woodshop. I had convinced myself, and set out to work.
I drew up plans, cutting not a single corner. No fasteners, all joinery. I thought, Holy smokes! This is an opportunity to use that gorgeous figured Makore veneer I have been storing for three years, waiting for the right moment! After a short indulgence of fantasizing about neighbors complimenting our new chests and gasping agog with envy to find them filled with toys, I set out to work.
I used the vacuum press to glue the veneer, all six sheets at once. It was outstanding! If you don't have a vacuum press, you really should invest in one. The Forrest blade in the table saw was cutting 8/4 cherry burn free, the bandsaw was resawing like a champ, jointer and planer eating up wood, Lie-Nielsen hand planes cleaning up and fine tuning surfaces and joints, it was all coming together so easily. So very, very easily. I found myself excited to make progress every night, and every night appreciating the fruits of years of quality tool acquisitions.
I was leading a charmed woodworking life and loving every minute of it. Best of all, I was going to be a hero to the wife, eliminating the bane of her existence in grand fashion. So what happened, you wonder? What’s the moral of the story? Where’s the punch line? You’re guessing assembly was a disaster; I should have measured twice and cut once. No, I measured once with Starrett and assembly went great. Oh, he must have botched – or blotched – the finish, you’re thinking. Nope! A coat of wax-free shellac and two coats of varnish went on without a hitch, a compressor and an air filtration unit make for a very clean finishing environment.
In the end, I had produced two matching chests that I am quite pleased with. A couple of months after completing the project, I gazed into my living room and was inspired to take a picture, realizing that there was, after all, something that needed to be shared with everyone.
This Christmas, just give my kids cash.

I was wrong. I told Jerry that guy better get himself to Macy's asap before there's nothing left on the registry, and I was wrong. Here's the thing - A while ago a guy came into the store and caught Jerry and I hard at work in the office. He had some questions about a wine station he wanted to build as a gift for his friend's wedding present. We talked for a while about everything from wood selection to joinery and basic elements of style, and it became pretty clear we were not talking to an expert woodworker. So I had to ask - when is the wedding? My eyes bugged when he told me... two weeks. And you have a daytime job? Yup. And you're not using plans? Yup. And you know it takes time for oil based finish to dry? Yup. You've got a lot of late nights ahead of you. Yup. A wine station sounds like a lovely first anniversary gift, I thought. I was wrong. A few weeks ago we got an e-mail from the guy with pictures of the wine station attached. I was absolutely thrilled. It was a reminder of the kinds of things we can accomplish when we approach challenges with enthusiasm, passion and a can't fail attitude. So it is that Woodcraft Rhode Island Nation (um, WRIN?) honors MIKE BELIARD, Woodcraft customer and great friend to a pair of lucky newlyweds.
