Woodworking in America Conference
(Action Required)

When Chris Schwarz of Popular Woodworking Magazine visited us in February, there was a great deal of interest in arranging a block of “seats” for friends of Woodcraft Atlanta to attend the Woodworking in America conference in Cincinnati, OH during October 1-3.

Now, thanks to the fine folks at Popular Woodworking, we are ready to execute this concept.  To make this happen, we need those of you with an interest in attending the conference to contact us ASAP here at the store (770-587-3372)  and request that we hold a seat for you.  Once we have your name, telephone number and email address we will forward some relevant information, including a preliminary schedule of sessions and events and information about lodging.

If past conferences are any indication, this will be a remarkable event – pure, fine woodworking topics from end to end. Billed as “The Ultimate Skill Building Weekend,” this conference will again feature a fantastic line-up of speakers, a vendor marketplace and loads of opportunities to test drive some of the industry’s best hand and power tools.  Also planned are some great optional events – from a dinner at the Popular Woodworking headquarters/workshop, to a trip to Whitewater’s Shaker Village.  And for those party-type attendees, there will be a Pub Crawl (...it’s a beer town, folks).

More information about logistics will follow.  For example, we will endeavor to arrange car-pools for those who may wish to ride-share.  If enough folks are interested, we may even consider getting a bus!  As far as accommodations, we will be working with the Northern Kentucky Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to get best rate at nearby hotels.

The Woodworking in America registration site will be up and running in early May.  Standard registration fees are $375.  Early bird registration will be $335.
However, for Woodcraft Atlanta patrons, Popular Woodworking is willing to extend a special conference rate of $295 per attendee (does not include optional events). Once we know who is interested, we will forward a special discount code to you so that you can apply the code at the end of the registration process to obtain the Woodcraft Atlanta discount!

Call 770-587-3372 today to secure your seat at the conference!

Benchcrafted has landed at Woodcraft Atlanta!

We are proud to introduce a portion of the tool line from this outstanding young American manufacturer.

Jameel Abraham, founder and inventor of these tools, as well as some truly fabulous work holding technology for workbenches, has become a good friend of our store.  You can meet Jameel at any Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool event, including the one near Atlanta in May, where we will also be a presence (more on that later).

The Benchcrafted Skraper is a versatile tool for particular tasks such as removing glue squeeze-out in joined panels; and refining surfaces and joinery.

The business-end of the Skraper is a solid carbide bar honed on three sides and ends. All 8 edges are razor sharp and capable of taking fine shavings. The 90 degree cutting angle, coupled with the thick carbide edge helps prevent grain tearing, especially when the tool is used at a skew to the grain. And since it's carbide, the edge lasts a long time. The Skraper can be resharpened with diamond abrasives. The blade can also be removed and flipped over if desired.

The BenchCrafted MAG-BLOK can be used for just about anything you can imagine. As long as it's magnet friendly you're good to go. You'll wonder how you got along without it!

Unlike typical magnetic holders that rely on steel railsls, the MAG-BLOK can't ding or nick your high quality blade steel. Your knives will stay sharp longer with the MAG-BLOK because wood is edge friendly. Also, unlike traditional knife blocks, bacteria cannot get trapped in deep slots.

The construction methods used to make MAG-BLOKs are such that the entire block seems to be a single piece of wood.  Unlike typical metal rail magnet bars, MAG-BLOKs are attractive, designed to accentuate and blend with their environment. Only premium solid hardwoods are used for MAG-BLOKs, finished with all natural, food safe BLOK-BUTTER resulting in a renewable satin wipe on finish. Backed by a lifetime guarantee.

Come buy and see these and other new items soon!

Introducing the Finest Handcrafted
Woodworking Layout Tools on the Planet!

And Woodcraft Atlanta is the First in North America
to Offer These Fine Tools for Sale

I met Chris Vesper of Vesper Tools at the October ’08 Woodworking in America Conference in Berea, KY. The passion for woodworking excellence exuded by this young Australian, as well as the astounding quality of his tools, immediately impressed me. I bought his cutting gauge on the spot. I was so thrilled with it that six months later I bought a pair of his amazing sliding bevels for a chair class. The experience with those tools convinced me that I had to bring all his tools into the store and make them available to the discriminating woodworkers who shop at Woodcraft Atlanta.

It took me a year, but they are finally here—at least most of them—with more coming. In the meantime, my friend Christopher Schwarz had also taken an editorial shine to them and also wrote about them in Fine Tool Journal. (You can personally hear Mr. Schwarz effuse about these tools and other topics when he visits to teach at Woodcraft Atlanta on February 25-27)

Check out the elegant variations of the gauges, bevels and try squares. Note the choice of engraved metal or inlaid exotic woods, like Australian black gum. These tools may seem expensive, but they are well worth the price once you set about to use them. Their functional beauty, accuracy and fit and finish is nonpareil. These are woodworking jewels that will add immense pleasure to the practice of the craft you love. And they will perform for generations to come or as a collectible heirloom.

Come by the store soon, and ask to see the Vesper Tools. You won’t fail to be impressed.

Home of the Ci1 Easy Rougher

Easy Wood Tools
Now at the Atlanta Woodcraft Store

The Easy Rougher series are carbide cutter woodturning tools that address fatigue, safety and efficiency like no other tool. They are designed to effortlessly remove massive amounts of material for any woodturning project without the need for sharpening. The tool design provides support directly beneath the cutting edge transferring the cutting pressure downward allowing the lathe to take the pressure that normally would go to your hands and body when roughing.

The goal at EWT is to step back and take a fresh look at the methods used in woodturning and then make every effort to eliminate those aspects that decrease our enjoyment of woodturning :

  • Sharpening – No need to spend time sharpening with replaceable carbide cutters.
  • Reduced Kick-back and catches – Due to the neutral cutting angles the tool is easy to use.
  • Fatigue – since pressure goes into the tool rest, your body doesn't get tired as quickly allowing more turning time.
  • Learning bevels – EWT tools are held flat on the rest and parallel to the floor. Cut left, right or straight in within minutes of picking up the tool.

The Easy Rougher series is the easiest, most efficient roughing tool you will ever use. Guaranteed 100%!

Lonnie Bird Amana Router Bits

A longtime friendship with Lonnie Bird has prompted us to carry the Amana router bits that bear his name. Lonnie is a Master Craftsman, noted author and tool designer who specializes in 18th century period furniture. His profiling and edging-shaping bits were designed to achieve period authenticity in the tops, moldings and trim pieces that grace, for example, a secretary desk, a dressing table, spice cabinet or a blanket chest that he has designed and also scaled down to smaller versions. For a full breakdown of these bits go to www.amanatool.com.

Recent innovations include the Tambour / Appliance Garage Door Bits shown above. This three-piece router bit set is designed for creating tambours without the need for wires, canvas or glue. The unique design shapes slats that interlock. And, assembly is easy. Simply slide the slats together to create a beautiful, flexible tambour that’s perfect for creating your own roll top desk, breadbox, or kitchen countertop storage areas.

If you want to build a period piece, you owe it to yourself to check out these high quality router bits to finish the job with elegance.
