Class Spotlight:
Mastering Finishing
with Don Washow
Saturday, Oct. 24th, 9:30am - 5pm
This is an advanced hands-on finishing class for everyone. The class begins with a discussion on surface preparation and the selection of sand paper. You will learn what surface each grit will produce and be able to recognize when to advance to the next grit. Each student is expected to prepare numerous hardwood samples obtaining preparation results from 150 through 400 grit. The second half of the class will introduce you to numerous stains, dyes, sanding sealers, conditioners, and top coats. We will discuss and use oil finishes, oil and urethane combinations, varnish, oil and varnish combinations, shellac, and finally waxes. Surface treatment between coats will be addressed. The material fee will cover material samples, sand paper, and finishing supplies.

Band Saw 101: Introduction To The Band Saw with Curt Vevang Tuesday, Oct. 27th, 6pm-9pm
This class will provide an overview of the band saw, one of the most versatile power tools in the woodshop. Topics will include band saw types and sizes, the basic construction and operation of the saw, how to tune and maintain the saw, blade types and selection, and demonstrations of a wide range of cutting applications.
Mastering Sharpening: Chisels
with Don Washow
Friday, Nov. 6th, 10am- 4pm
Understanding the differences between sharpening systems and selecting the best system for you is one of the most confusing subjects in woodworking. Don starts at the beginning, explaining the sandpaper system, then continues to compare water stones, diamond plates and oil stones. He will give you information on cross referencing the different grit systems, so that comparing performance and price is easier. You will be provided with equipment to flatten and sharpen on sandpaper with a jig, however diamond plates, water stones and oil stones will be available for everyone to use. You will learn how to hollow grind on a bench grinder, then hone on water stones, to produce a surgically sharp tool. By the end of the class you will understand what sharp is and have had the opportunity to experience tools sharper than you could have ever imagined.
