It’s a rectangular table with a pedestal and three curved legs. The legs are fitted to the pedestal with sliding dovetails. There is a drawer, with dovetail construction, that can be opened from either side because the table was designed to be used by two Shaker Sisters at the same time. The sewing stand is constructed with solid cherry and a secondary wood for the drawer sides. Students will be using power tools as well as hand tools. Experience cutting dovetails will be helpful but not necessary. Students will also execute sliding dovetails with a combination of a router, template, and hand tools. Characteristics of wood, particularly the way it reacts to changes of seasons and humidity, will be covered in depth. Required Tools: Tape measure Combination square Pencil

Make a Marking Gauge

with Steve Brown

Saturday, May 18, 9 AM - 3 PM

The importance of some woodworking tools is sometimes under appreciated. Anyone new to woodworking probably hasn't ever used one and might assume differences between different models don't affect the quality of the scribe lines it creates. once you start cutting and fitting joints like mortise and tenons or dovetails you see the difference between a clean cut shoulder line and one that is ragged and torn. In this class we will make a marking gauge that is comfortable to use, attractive and will work as well (or better) than any one on the market. The class is open to all levels of woodworking experience. Attention will be given to gaining understanding of methods and techniques and how they relate to woodworking.

Fundamentals of Woodturning

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, June 1, 9 AM - 3 PM

Part 2: Sunday, June 2, 9 AM - 3 PM

Begin the week learning the fundamental techniques of spindle turning and shift to bowl turning mid-week. Students will be trained in fundamental chisel and gouge spindle-cutting techniques and developing an eye for making the shape desired. Using these techniques, turners cut wood efficiently and leave a smooth accurate surface in their work. We learn how to use the bevel gracefully to guide the knife edge along a smooth curve and why this technique allows such smooth tool control. We sand to perfection and add a quick oil finish to bring out the luster of your work. This class focuses on practicing proper techniques and we make a series of totems that serve as a reminder of the techniques that you learned. Beginning by roughing the blank to a cylinder, we practice the planing, chamfer and peeling cuts with the skew chisel. We proceed to the detail gouge and learn coves and beads. The results of your practice are your totems for use as reference when making other projects. After practicing the fundamental cuts, we discuss what items can be made your new repertoire such as a candlestick, mallet, cooking flipper, bud vase, spurtle. We then choose a project for you to make—each student makes items of their own design so think of a couple spindle pieces that you would like to make. By adding one more gouge technique, students learn to orient wood grain across the axis and make bowls. The spindle experience makes this new technique quick and easy to learn. We start with a simple bowl design and move to bowls with a bit more style. Think of bowl designs that you like and bring your ideas—we will make them in wood!

Learning to use hand tools correctly will open an entirely new woodworking experience, one that is enjoyable, very satisfying, and not as loud or dusty. Not many things in woodworking are more discouraging or frustrating than trying to use dull or neglected tools. In this twelve-week, one night per week class, you will learn how to use a handsaw and tune-up and use a hand plane, chisels, marking gauge, and marking knife. This is a skills-based class with a heavy emphasis on fundamentals, proper technique and safety. Students will be taught how to layout and execute fine joinery such as mortise and tenon, through dovetails, and half-blind dovetails. The instructor will also talk about wood movement and what can happen if you don't allow for it. During this class, students will build a traditional wall-hung cupboard with dovetailed casework using quality hardwood. Students will be required to bring some hand tools and they will learn how to make these tools perform at their optimum. Some of the lessons are: Sharpening chisels and plane irons Hand tool tune-up Sawing to a line Proper use of a chisel Using marking gauges and marking knives for accurate lines Using a hand plane Mortise and tenon joinery Dovetail joinery Wood movement Where and how to purchase furniture grade lumber Required Tools: Hand plane (number 3 or 4) ***** If you purchase a Stanley #4, the instructor suggests that you choose a vintage plane instead of a new one.
