Introduction To Pen Turning with Doug Keen
Beginner/Intermediate
Prerequisite: Basic Wood Turing Experience
Tools Required: Safety Glasses, Breathing Protection & Pencil
Class Size: 2-4
Description: Students will learn how to select a pen blank and prepare it for the desired pen kit. Then you will learn to turn it to the desired shape and sand it to be free of tool marks, grain and other defects. The final steps will be applying a finish and assembling the pen.

Description: In this class, you will learn the terminology of the lathe and lathe tools, and gain an understanding of the three basic cuts in woodturning that are the foundation of all woodturning. You will practice these skills, tool and body positions and movement to develop effective and safe turning practices. Then apply what you learn to make a small project such as a spindle, honey dipper or tool handle.

Description: In this class you will learn how to select wood based on species and grain orientation, and how to mount the wood on the lathe using two different techniques. You will also learn how to select the best tools for rounding the sides and face in preparation for turning and the right tools for shaping the bowl and hollowing the inside. The final steps in the class are sanding and finishing.

Sharpening Lathe Chisels with Doug Keen

Description: Sharp tools equal good finished pieces. This course will teach the basic skills needed to keep your turning chisels in good cutting condition. You will learn to sharpen a roughing gouge, bowl gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool and skew chisel. sharpening will be done on a slow speed grinder with and aluminum oxide wheel and a CBN wheel.
