    Beautiful sharp knife.

This was my first foray into high end knife making. It was pretty easy once I got going. I used Ipe scales (given to me from my brother in law). Rather than use the rivets, I used mosaic pins that I also bought from Woodcraft. They worked well, but if you need to expand the holes, be advised that the metal is very hard, and you'll need diamond Dremel-type bits to grind away the metal. The knife is razor sharp and the Damascus steel is beautiful. I've been using my knife for about 6 months now, and it's finally getting to the point where it'll need to be sharpened or honed. It's my go-to knife in the kitchen these days. I'll be giving the 2nd one I made to the person who gave me the scales for Xmas, and I'm sure he'll love it.

    Excellent decorative and/or kitchen knife

I've made 3 knifes with this Santoku blank, and each one turned out rather well. Use pins and do not bother with the rivets (1/4" mosaic pins look really nice). The VG-10 steel is excellent and sharpens very well at an 11 degree bevel; the Damascus layering is traditional (which is my preference) and matches well with hardwood scales. As a culinary knife, it sharpens nicely, cuts wonderfully, and holds its edge; is tops in our kitchen. This knife makes an excellent functional and/or ornamental gift (I made one for a Japanese friend, using Jack Daniels barrel scales, and he loves it).

Nice knife with a little work

Bolsters weren't square so I had to spend some time filing them. Nice knife in the end.

    Nice Blade

Nice knife as far as Japanese production knife goes. Not really sharp outof box, but shapened up nicely on water stones and strop. Rivets are junk, I had to drill 2 back out because they broke. Better off using rods as pins. Maintains edge fairly well and doesnt require the maintenance of high carbon steel japanese blades.

    Quality Knife, Sharp, Well Balanced

This is an absolutely beautiful knife. I am so impressed with the quality that I am ordering other Zhen knife kits to add to our cutlery. One word of caution. Check the hilt. There was a burr on the handle side of the hilt that kept one of the stiles from sitting flush against it. A small file quickly took care of the issue.

    Great Knife, holds edge well

This knife is my wife's favorite. I have a spyderco folding knife in VG-10 and I love it. This knife seems to share the excellent edge retention that my spyderco does. For a damascus knife of this quality the price is great. I finished it very plainly with bolivian rosewood sanded to 1000 grit, it looks great. I drilled 3/16 holes for pins instead of using the included rivets, which aren't very impressive. So far my wife has used it everyday for 6 months and I've sharpened it once. This blade size and shape are perfect for the qualities of VG-10. Don't put it in the dishwasher and don't use on bones or non-food items as a steel with this level of edge retention will chip if used carelessly. I'll be buying one as a wedding present and several for Christmas gifts as well.

    Very Nice!

The kit did not come with instructions for the scales. I wasn't sure how much the rivets tightened. The instructions were emailed right away when I asked for them. The kit even included an extra rivet. The finished product looks terrific. I laminated strips of veneer stained 3 different colors. Ebony, Special Walnut and Natural. I alternated the layers to get the needed 1/2 inch thickness. It took 24 layers. The finished pattern on the scales is similar to the pattern of the folded layers of the steel knife. Time will tell how well it holds an edge.
