unparalleled value
I have been making scales for Zhen knives for sometime now (over 25) for ourselves and fir gifts for family and friends. I have purchased exotic woods for the scales and use my own brass and mosaic pins instead of supplied pins. just my preference. the knives stay incredibly sharp and I use a knife sharpening system to keep them that way. Nothing better to use than a sharp knife and the beauty of the Zhen knife is well appreciated.

Same steel and design as Shun Classic for 25% of t
The Shun Classic is the ideal paring knife for me. The blade and handle are the right size and balance and the blade takes and holds a razor sharp edge. The Zhen kit uses the same steel and blade shape and I get a little shop time using interesting materials for the knife scales. While I would typically use either Desert Ironwood, a true Rosewood (anything in the Dalbergia genus), or a stabilized wood, I chose a product from M3 metal that has the look of Damascus steel similar to the blade. M3 is also heavy and gave the paring knife a great feel in my hand.

Good, not great.
True knives should not bend/warp easily, if at all. I just forged my own knife and made the handles for it recently and I can't even bend it by putting my weight against it. No matter how thick the blade is, it should be pretty tough to bend. This, however, I can bend with one hand and it stays bent. If you're not looking for a high, professional quality damascus steel blade, then this ought to be great. But if you think that this blade is the best of the best and a bargain, just keep in mind that you get what you pay for. That said, it's a great way to learn to make handles for knives, and a pretty quick and easy kit/project.

Great knife
This is one awesome knife! It is sharp and it a great gift for the wife. They only problem is the rivets (screws) are too long. I had to cut off each end to make them short enough to use for a paring knife. Plan on ordering your own rivets to match your scales thickness.Wish I bought more of these.

Very good buy
I purchases 4 knives and none of them had bolsters that were shaped well as they relate to the handle scale, they weren't perpendicular to the blade or even straight for that matter and required some file work for them to match up with my scales well. Also the handles all had some slight cupping that needed to be filed down. I was a little disappointed by the very light damascus stripes on the knives but I tossed them in some etching solution for a few minutes and it really made them pop. It revealed a lot more lines than were there before. Looks like a $50 blade blank now after polishing. The bolster doesn't drop down into the heel of the knife which is nice because it makes sharpening easier and lets that be used more fully. Balance point depending on the scale material will be 1/3-1/2 of the way back from the bolster. Absolute minimum handle scale size is 1/4" x 7/8" x 3 7/8" but aim for 3/8" X 1" X 4" to have some room for shaping. Handle is 1/8" thick with three holes drilled, one in the center and 1/2" from the edges of the handle. 400 grit sand paper took the lettering off the blade and a little buffing compound brought the shine right back. 180 grit paper cut the handles very quickly and left a nice satin finish. For what you get it is a pretty good value and an attractive tool once finished. Comes in a decent box that not one would feel ashamed to get as a gift.

A very nice looking knife
The steel looks great - I fitted bloodwood skins which highlight the depth of colour in the laminates - topped off with brass pins for contrast..this is a great knife which is easy to complete as a first time project. Will certainly get more

BlankityBlank
Easy way to experience adding scales to a knife blank. I like the blade showing the layers and it makes no difference to me that it was made in China, but I think it should have been clearly stated in the item description. I intended this as a gift and I am certain it will be appreciated.

Very nice High Quality knife
I bought a few of these for Christmas gifts and tried one out for myself. This one is made from Desert Ironwood and uses hidden rivets. This is a very simple project for most makers and gives you a high quality Damascus blade knife which will keep a razor edge for a long time.
