The Alaskan ULU knife was first crafted by Native Alaskan residents over 5,000 years ago and was primarily used by Eskimo women for skinning and cleaning fish. Today people everywhere have discovered the versatility of this knife for slicing meats, dicing vegetables and a lot more. The knife’s rocking motion makes it extremely easy to use. Since the center of force is concentrated over the middle of the blade, it creates twice the downward force compared to conventional cutlery.

Finicky to make a handle. Blade surprisingly rusted.
I'm a bit disappointed with these kits. I bought several to make as gifts and because I wanted one for myself. Since I now have a brand new CNC, it was a perfect time to try out assembly line procedures to make the handles. In some respects it worked very well - shaping the outside of the scales went well, and the positioning of the holes in the tangs was perfectly consistent so that having a CNC machine make the holes in the scales went well. But making the mortises for the tangs of the blade required hand work each time. I had to refine the depth and width of the hollow in each scale, because the tangs weren't quite perfectly uniform in thickness or width. This is ONLY a problem if you use something like CNC to make the mortises. If you make a custom handle for each blade by hand, it shouldn't be a problem. The other issue is being able to make a small countersink in the scales for each provided screw-on "rivet". Getting the depth right is fairly critical, because if you go too deep, they won't be able to snug up. In use, there were also some problems. First, even with the not-very-large hands I have, there wasn't a lot of room for my fingers underneath the handle. It's a bit easier to just hold the handle without wrapping my fingers around it. Having the two tangs maybe a half an inch farther apart, AND making them narrower would be a bit more comfortable. Second, I noticed that after only a few uses, there were rust spots along the edge where a drop of water had remained after washing. The rest of the blade is still very sharp, so it's not a huge deal, but it shouldn't be happening. I'm now VERY careful to dry the knife after washing it. I do have to say that this is an unparalleled pizza knife.
An AWESOME way to try out knifemaking.
I have highly enjoyed completing this kits. They are very popular.
I ordered 2 and was very pleased with the product. Nice weight and all in all a great kit, am going to order two more for gifts.
I ordered two of these not knowing what to expect. very pleasantly surprised, with both the weight of the knife and the Quality. I had intended to use them for filling out some of my woodcraft at a local art fair I'm involved with, but now I might keep them and give them to my kids for christmas...
if i only had the small fingers of a child !
The blade is nice, sharp, graceful ... but assembly of the handle is impossible given the minute tolerances of the required holes and the tiny, tiny size of the screws. the angled torques that come with the blade are clumsy and useless. this design could be so greatly improved by making the holes in the blade larger and allowing for different fasteners. i ve purchased 3 blades; had what i thought were beginner's troubles with the first one, the second one was a bit easier, not great, and the third just went south into "forget it and come back to it" frustration. there are other knife blades on the market with larger holes that are much easier to work with. Caution: they may have a different radius. i will not buy one of these blades again, given there are alternatives.
