Like all WoodRiver V3 Hand Planes, the No. 1 features a ductile iron body precision machined to be flat and square, brass screws, an adjuster knob, and a beautiful finished hardwood knob and tote. However, unlike its larger siblings, the No. 1 has no lateral adjustment lever. At 1.3 lbs., it's just a tad heavier than the original Stanley. But don't let its size fool you: the WoodRiver No. 1 is a fully functional plane that is very much at home in the workshop making shavings!

Tiny, but mighty!
A couple of years ago, I began accumulating Stanley hand planes. I have most of the common sizes. I've learned how to set them up, hone the blades and how to use them. This reissue of the Stanley #1 bench plane caught my eye, and I just couldn't resist! After all, an original Stanley #1 would cost at least 20 or 30 times the cost if this little jewel! So, what is it like? It's a really accurate reissue of the original Stanley #1 plane. There is no lateral adjustment on this particular model, but there was no lateral adjustment on the original, either. The body casting is really nice. The machining and polishing on the parts is excellent. The blade and chip breaker are similar to what I have seen in original Stanley planes. I can't wait to take this out to the workshop and make some shavings!

great plane
Ive done a lot of wood projects over the years but I generally use sanding over planing, which hasnt exactly made the job much easier at times. I made a few projects over the last few weeks and bought a 12inch disk sander to work on them but all it was doing was marring the wood around the spot I really needed to smooth down to the rest of the surface, leaving me even more sanding. At homedepot I saw a tiny $10 plane and ended up buying it to see how it'd deal with some of the smoothing / shaping I needed to do, and it worked out great. So I wanted to look for a good quality plane, small but not a hand cutter like the one Id just bought. This #1 from WoodRiver fit the bill and from what I can tell from playing around with it for quite a few hours its going to be exactly what i need. I love the very fine adjustment on the blade depth. It'll easily shave off even strips thinner than a sheet of notebook paper. Best money Ive spent on a tool in a long time. Probably going to buy a larger model over the next couple weeks. Glad I paid the extra and got this WR instead of settling for junk from another company.

My First WoodRiver plane
I was very impressed with the Quality of this little plane. All I had to do was to put a micro bevel on the Blade in within 5 mins I was making paper thin ribbons. I Think I will order a 5 1/2 jack Plane next month. Great job guys!!!!!

Love this little guy
I love planes and was intrigued by this little No. 1 when I saw it in the catalog. I already own the Wood River No. 4 and am very happy with that plane. I finally broke down and ordered the No. 1 a couple of weeks ago, knowing full well that it was a totally unnecessary purchase, since my block planes do a great job on small stuff. Well so far I am very happy with the purchase. Seems to work great right out of the box. I haven't done any tuning or honing yet. My only negative, and it's a small one, is that the finish on the wood parts is very minimal and not as nice as that on my No. 4 plane. I am building a little rack for it so I can keep it in a very handy place on my workbench. I expect to be grabbing it often. Admittedly, the block planes will cover most of the bases that I would cover with this plane, but time will tell. I look forward to integrating this plane into my woodworking.

v-3 Number 1 plane
great plane for the price point. I really like the robust bubinga handles. I also have a contemporary competitor, and this is an excellent comparison to it. I would recommend this plane to any collector and better yet as a user in the shop. I would almost give this a five star rating...4.89 stars

I would buy this plane again
I'm a woodworker and have been using Stanley bench planes for many years. My collection includes a no. 2 thru a no. 8. But like most, I just couldn't bring myself to pay the asking prices for a Stanley no. 1. When I saw that Woodcraft was now offering a no. 1 sized plane I headed to the store to check it out and it was on sale. My first reaction was, wow, this plane really is small, a miniature version of all my other planes. It is impossible for anyone (adult or kids) to grip the tote in a normal manner, but its size is what makes it so special. I was amazed at how well it was machined. The brass adjustment knob works smoothly. The bubinga knob and tote are beautiful and the thicker blade and unique chip breaker design are both of very high quality. When I got it back to my workshop I wiped off the protective oil and tried it right out of the box. It performed well and I was able to make full width shavings. Next I disassembled it and applied small drops of oil to all screws and then checked the bottom for flatness, which it was and the sides were 90 degrees to the bottom. The back of the blade needed a light lapping followed by a minor re-sharpening of the blade. The leading and trailing edges of the mouth had a very slight burr that I easily removed with a small fine file. After my minimal adjustments, taking about 15 minutes the plane worked very well on maple when set to take thin shavings. Bottom line, anyone that wants a no. 1 sized plane at a very reasonable price, then Woodcraft's Woodriver V3 is a very viable choice. It's a high quality plane at a 1/10th the cost of a Stanley no. 1 and 1/2 the cost of a LN no. 1. For the cost, it can actually be a user and not just a collectible sitting on a shelf. Congratulations Woodcraft for another quality tool.
