Ever since sliding compound mitersaws replaced radial-arm saws, users have learned to deal with the saw’s major shortcoming: The rails that support the motor and guide the blade require almost as much clearance at the back of the tool as the cutting table does at the front. That foot or so might not seem like much, but providing rail space often means sacrificing floor space, a resource that most basement and garage shops have in very short supply. Thankfully, Bosch has devised a saw that shrinks the footprint by 12".
Superb tool for a limited range of uses.
I was about to put my large Wood River up for sale when I thought of using it to trim the overhang of oak plywood edging on a large 3/4" thick plywood panel. To my pleasure and surprise the Wood River large chisel worked marvelously well; fast, easy, and accurate. I am now keeping this lovely stainless steel chisel plane and have wrapped its cardboard container in shipping tape to make it a permanent place to store and protect the tool when I am not using it. The plane is no longer offered for sale, but it may come up for sale on Ebay from time to time. Be aware that Wood River, and several other firms, also offer smaller chisel planes for sale. I have two of these, and they are very useful but lack the sheer mass that makes edge trimming so effective on oak plywood edging.
like tools of old
I purchased this for use cleaning up excess glue from inside corners and all those hard to get at spaces. It reminds me of tools of old made from quality heavy weight material that has a real feel in your hand. The body benifits from a little bit of smoothing and tuning from new, but overall it is very nice straight out of the box. As with all the wood river planes, I regard it as exceptional value for money and a pleasure to use.
