Tamarindus indica. Spalted Tamarind has a spectacular heartwood with back ground colors of ivory, yellow and black lines, which gives an unpredictable landscape effect. Much of the wood comes from logs that were found on the forest floor. It turns and finishes well. Due to the nature of the specie, bug and worm holes may be present on some blanks, and no two are alike. Native to Laos.We have collected some of the most highly figured pieces and improved on Mother Nature by stabilizing them with an acrylic resin injection. This virtually eliminates the biggest problem with burl turnings: checking and cracking due to expansion or contraction.

We recommend taking precautions when working with spalted wood, such as using adequate dust-collection equipment and wearing a personal respirator or mask. Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.Thin Stock. Nice Wood BUT...

I bought this wood because it had an interesting pattern. It turned OK and the end result was nice. The smell of this wood as it was being cut, drilled, and turned was quite powerful. It reminded me of acrylic mixed with auto shop. Once I sealed it and added the wax finish, the smell was no longer noticeable.
