From cutting and marking in the shop, to hunting and camping, to preparing a simple meal, a good knife is indispensable. Mass-produced knives can be found for every budget and use. But custom knives, which are often far more attractive, tend to get expensive very quickly.
Of course, the ultimate custom knife would include a hand-forged and hand-sharpened blade. If you’re not up for the expense and dirty work of such an endeavor, you can still experience the pride of a well-crafted and functional addition to your tool collection. All you need is a knife kit.
At one time, every man in America worth a nickel had a pocketknife on him. “You never know when you might need it” was the philosophy, and a man always wanted to be prepared for any situation. There are still plenty of folks out there who consider a pocketknife as critical as a cell phone.
Take the plunge this year, and handcraft at least one of your gifts.

Great kit, sharp and sweet action. I have made more than 10 of these kits, if the action on the blade is sticky, just barley loosen the screw as some are over tourqued. I also recommend scratching the metal under the handle before epoxy, any questions Look for @LeftBrainCo on instagram I’ll be happy to give tips!
I love this kit....
I'm a professional jeweler and artist. I bought this kit to make a Christmas present for one of my relatives. As some others have stated, the instructions are not the best. Fortunately, I own all the tools required to put this knife together. You need certain drill bits to drill holes and countersink them - you also need to have a basic understanding of how knives go together. I will say, however, that this knife is already assembled - all you do is add the scales. Easy Peasy.
Pretty darn good for the price
Was a knifemaker 30+ y/o. This was a first practice run to start again and it went beautifully. The rosewood scales needed careful TLC. I made a mistake of epoxying the scales to the liners before applying a finish, so I ended up heating the scales after dewhiskering and rubbing in hot gun stock wax. Worked beautifully.
Great knife so far excellent quality
Directions could be a lot better. Most directions from Woodcraft have a lot to be desired. They are not well written. I saw one comment on the reviews of this knife where someone mentioned the knife is hard to open. I Had the same experience but found out that you need to look closely at the length of the screws provided there are (3) screws that a tad shorter, these are the ones for the pocket clip. Mine now opens must easier and closes easier. I personally used two part epoxy rather than the screws. It is cleaner looking but be sure to mix enough hardener in the epoxy or it will take 24 hours to dry. It happened to me on one side of the knife during the handle installation. After cutting the outline in acrylic handles a Dremel tool grinder was perfect for shaping the contour of the handles. Quite pleased Woodcraft needs to do some work on their instructions and diagrams for a lot of their kits !!!! One last thing these knives are difficult to find in the stores and I typically use 2 store in my state and they are out of stock !! I was able to find one after waiting several weeks and they only got (2) of them in. It was not a franchise store but a corporate store. What gives with that ?
Makes a great Gift
I added bocote scales and used a rasp to fashion the handle. After finishing to 1500 grit wet-dry sandpaper, the finish really popped. Makes a big impression and a very worthy gift. Don't minimize this 'kit.' All the sanding is worthwhile as the knife fits your hand like a glove I'll be doing again. This time for me
Instructions tell you to drill counter bore holes on the side of the scales that face the knife instead of on the outside. Easy kit to build and looks great. Makes a great Christmas present. Blade comes very sharp. I don't know how well it will hold up to use. Good kit for the money.
Looks and feels Great
Looks and goes together great
very nice knife when finished
Makes a beautiful knife. Becareful with little screws, they strip easily.
Can't beat it for the price!
This kit is basic and straight to the point. Great price for what you get. Like others have commented, it is really easy to make.
bought one now have to make 4 more
I bought one of these and put some walnut on the handle with my name carved in it and showed it off to some friends. Had four of them ask me to make them one too.
I would buy this product again!
Good Value for the price.
Should say "Handle Kit"
The knife comes fully assembled without much room for customization. The pride of building a knife is just not there, when all you're really gonna do is attach the scales, that don't com with btw. Other than that, overall it's a fine knife and I would recommend it to a very beginner. WOODCRAFT'S SERVICE WAS TOP-NOTCH!
nice but not without work
nice kit and the knife came out well. the down side is that the instructions are lousy. the kit includes screws to attach the scales but no where in the instructions does it tell you to use them. also it says to remove the pocket clip before you start. it's never attached in the first place. if this is your first kife kit look for better on line instructions first.
Decent knife, a bit hard to open blade
Fun Kit and easy
Made this knife for my brother and it turned out great. I was pleasantly surprised that the steel wasn't to bad. Easy and fun.
Made a great Gift
This is a great little kit. The Knife came out great .The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is that I have not had time to put the steel to the test but its 440 stainless it should hold an edge pretty well.
