Terrific beginners books
If you are beginning wood carving, and like doing Santas, any book by Ron Ransom on the subject is terrific. Ron has a distinct style that is simple but charming and whimsical. The success of his style is evidenced by the umpteen carvers who copy his style. Ron's books are what got me started with carving. The instruction format is sequential photos with captions on what to do next and what tool to use. Usually I don't like instruction mainly by photos, but Ron's books are an exception. The photos really do convey a lot of insight on proportions, kinds of cuts and gouge patterns, and other details. Now that years have gone by, I have gone on to many other kinds of carvings, some far more intricate. But I always like to come back and do a "Ransom-style" piece every now and then. Buy his books and follow his simple instructions - they will boost your confidence if you are a beginner. Good luck and happy carving!
