Excellent Quality and Utility at a Surprising Price
Having built my previous workbenches for decades I've reached the point where I just wanted to find a good workbench or top to simplify getting back up to speed after my recent move. I am pretty picky and wanted a good size face vise and a good tail vise. The tail vise narrowed down my search considerably. I was wary of this workbench since I have never seen a Ramia bench in person and the price was substantially lower than other benches of this capability. Now that it's together I am very happy indeed. The workbench is constructed of thick beech lumber with robust finger joints. The quality of the wood is excellent - clear and straight-grained. Not as heavy as my previous maple workbench, but certainly not lacking in strength. The face vise has a heavy steel body and screw, with a generous beech face. My only wish for improvement would have been to use a quick-release mechanism for faster adjustments. But the vise is just fine and smooth operating. The tail vise is the more useful (in my opinion) "L" shape providing two clamping face options, and I was pleasantly surprised that the tail vise has steel guide rails on the short side of the vise to improve strength and reduce racking. An extra touch is that the bench dog holes in the front apron and vises are double drilled for a 3/4" shaft and a 1-3/16" x 1" counter bore for dogs with large heads. The bench comes with four such steel dogs. The wood is not sanded as smooth as I would like, but it is well machined with no tool marks or blemishes. There is not much work required to assemble this workbench. The vise bodies come pre-mounted with all holes drilled. The cut, fit and finish of all assembly pieces were, in a word, perfect. No forcing, filing or adjustments required. I can unequivocally recommend this workbench. The materials, build quality and price are truly remarkable.
