Tom Vensel is an expert woodworker and part of the Turning Tuesday’s group over at Codger Lodge in Lubeck West Virginia. Recently, I was able to capture his handcrafted Swing-Away Tail Stock. Although there are some other options on the market like this Nova Bed Extension Swing-Away, Tom explains his version here.
Worth it with a bed extension for bowls
I got tired of lifting the tailstock on my Nova lathe during bowl turning. This plus the bed extension is expensive but certainly will save your back. You can easily slide the tailstock out of the way after roughing the outside of a bowl. Then easily slide the banjo out of the way during sanding and finishing of a bowl. I did have to hone/lap the pieces to get the rails to the same height/width and remove burrs so the tailstock especially, and the banjo, would slide freely through the hinge onto the extension.
This swing away attachment, or knuckle, is a great feature for the nova lathe user. It helps to move the extra bed section away when not needed or adds much length to the nova lathe with the extension. It is solidly built, and precise, and is easy to align with some tailstock movements. It is full of cosmoline grease when purchased, so get the gloves, rags, and paint thinnner and take the whole thing apart, degrease it, and put it back together with heavy-duty grease on the friction surfaces and the large pin. A truly great accessory for the nova lathe user. Very accurate too!
Nova Lathe Accessories
It would be great if you would provide more information on accessories, such as pictures of each in use, what else might be required to use these (such as with the Nova chuck jaws - which chuck, etc.).
