Bison has been forging quality tools for over 125 years. Bison’s tools are used by the German Army, fire brigades and foresters worldwide. Bison 1879 is a return to the Master Blacksmith’s art of hand forging traditional axes of the highest quality, using traditional designs and only the highest quality German Steel hardened to HRC51-56. Every Bison 1879 is fitted with an American hickory handle and wedged with both wood and steel wedges for ultimate durability. The Bison 1879 Mountain Hatchet is more of a small axe with its 23.6" long handle. The unique shape of the head, with its short toe and long backward heel, helps the tool slice through wood. It is a nice size camp axe, which is also good for limbing and felling small trees.

    Horribly Hung

the handle is hung about 1/4" short from the top of the eye... kind of unacceptable for a $90 hatchet/axe in my opinion. Other than that pretty great and unique axe.

    nice chopper

solid pack axe. great size, not too big, not too small. I'm 5'8" and this is ideal for me. only knock I can give it is the heat treatment; it seems a little soft for my liking. I was hitting knots in some pine and it ended up getting a few dings in it. I used a puck to sharpen it up and put more of a convex edge on it and it seems to be holding up ok. I have a Fiskars x15, Council Tool Velvicut Boys Axe, I've used a Hultz Bruk Kisa; with a thicker handle, nice shape, and decent splitter the bison mountain hatchet is the first one I reach for.
