    1 1/2" x 36" round maple dowel

I recently purchased two 1 1/2" x 36" hard maple dowel. I cut one dowel in half and soaked both pieces in mineral oil for about 72 hours. I successfully cut screw threads on one of the pieces - perfect threads, no tear-out. Not so with the second 18" section. Tear-out galore. The reason? I failed to check the diameter; the rod had an inconsistent diameter, one end was fine while the other was oversized. Why can't size specifications be checked before shipment?

    frustrated

I know lots of wood is sold in nominal sizes, but I expected hardwood, presanded dowels would actually be the diameter labeled. If they're machining them already, why leave them just a little bit bigger than the stated diameter. It would have been easier to simply turn my own 1 1/2" dowel than trying to get this dowel down to size.

    Good economics

I normally prefer to pick out wood in person but saw these on sale and decided to give them a try online. Clearly more economical than turning my own 1 1/2 inch dowels, which would be my normal approach. Solid, no knots or defects that would weaken the dowel, which was my big concern on ordering. Four stars rather than 5 only because they arrived with more dings than I was expecting. (note, these were light dings) My application will have them in full view so more refinishing time will be needed than I had hoped. That said, solid, time saving, and would recommend to anyone needing large doweling.
