The Recipe Box (And How To Make It!) – Part 1: The Initial Design & Build
Christmastime is one of those perfect times of the year to make someone a special handmade gift. So I took to the shop after Thanksgiving, stepping away from my lathe and decided to do something different. With my daughter Maddy’s growing interest in baking, I decided to make her a heirloom Recipe Box as a Christmas gift. I purchased a Bubinga board about 6 ft.in length x 11″ wide x 3/4″ thick from Woodcraft. It had such beautiful figured grain and sort of a pink-brown color to it, perfect for my 16 year old. It has been a number of years (about 35!) since I’ve done any flat work, back in my Boardman High School days in Ohio, learning under the tutelage of Mr. Haug, my woodshop instructor.

Kayak Building Part 6 – Shaving and Scraping the Epoxy
Earlier in May, Lee commented on Kayak Blog #3 that “I am an avid woodworker and kayaker and a regular visitor at our local Woodcraft Store (Parkersburg). I gotta do this!” Since Lee was a local customer, I contacted him through email and invited him to the lockmaster’s house to check out the boat. I found that he actually lives about 80 miles away, but he would be passing through the area the next week, so we made plans to meet in Marietta.

Good buy!
Scrapers work very well and are easy to dress. You cant go wrong with this set

Not ready to use...
These scrapers are OK but be prepared to spend LOTS of time getting them ready to use. They appear to be roughly stamped or cut out and working edges, especially curved edges, need major work to make the tools usable. I expected to need to do the usual final finishing and burnishing but the working surfaces of these scrapers are just plain rough. They will probably work fine when I find the time to get them finished.

Great Little Helpers
This Scrapers are a time saver little helpers, keep their edge super fine compared to my 20 year old ones that this ones replaced
-
Cheap price, but don't let that fool you
As a full time gunsmith I use scrapers and have made mine in the past. These are very nice and inexpensive. Saved me time making my own scrapers.
-
Better than I expected
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the scrapers, they were a spur of the moment purchase because the sale price was so good and I had considered buying them before. I wanted to see what a scrap of Amboyna Burl looked like decided I would open up the scrapers to see if the machining might have left a burr and was pleased to see it had and gave the scrap a few scrapes and was pleased with the results.

these are among my shop basics
scraper blades are sometimes better than smoothing planes . . . these are among the basic staples in my sanding/rubbing work. like all cutters and scrappers, you've got to hone it before use.
-
Dust and sanding savers
Great for glued up panels for cabinet doors.
-
Quality material
As with any tool out of the box, needs to be sharpened to your own specs.
-
Exciting steel!
I needed a set of scrapers to finish an instrument I'm working on. These tools have done the trick! Much better results verses sanding and 10 times faster. Wish I had known about this "advanced" technology years ago.

scraper
The scrapers are a good deal. I was suprised to see how strong they are
-
Scrape IT!
Did a great job of removing the "fuzz" from the end grain of the bowls I was turning. Also removed the bumps from the sides of the bowl. Incredibly handy
-
quality steel
these are quality scrapers if you want to put an authentic feel to your solid wood project I sand down to 220 and run the scrapers over to eliminate any remaining swirls and leave micro work lines with the grain
-
curved scrapers worked well'

Specialized Scrapers Get the Job Done
I have always known the value of a good scraper. I should have bought these years ago. If you want to save time and save some of the cost of abrasives get a set of these. While not as sharp as I would like they are good enough to work with out of the package.
-
Excellent Value
This is a nice set of high quality scrapers at an excellent price--particularly on sale. They are as sturdy and hold as good an edge as the higher priced "premium" brands. If you need a variety of scraper profiles, this is the perfect way to get what you need with only one trip to the store (or order).
-
Nice
Thick steel doesn't heat up quickly. Sharp right out of the package.
-
Perfect for book edge gold gilting
I use these scraper for the final smoother of book edges prior to applying gold leaf. Much better than sandpaper.
