Joinery: Handmade vs. Machine-Made
Woodworking comes in all shapes, sizes and varieties. But no matter what your woodworking passion might be, eventually you’re going to need to join together two pieces of wood. And that opens up a world of joinery options.
Whatever method you choose, the question is—do you make your
joinery by hand or by machine? Here’s what our experts had to say…

Still Struggling to Figure This Out
Admittedly I am a fair newbie. That said, I have yet to cut a successful through dovetail with this jig but have managed to mutilate a lot of wood while trying. A complicated mess using my Festool 1400 router and the Leigh guide bushing. Trying to sort out tail from pin orientation and position for router to follow, piece thickness and the 2 clamps that are quite sensitive to workpiece size. Cannot see the workpiece at all with VRS in place. I guess I expected a simpler device for the money. That said, I'm going to check out the Sommerfeld jig and see if it simplifies the act of cutting a dovetail. Supposedly it clamps to the workpiece and you use your router table instead of a hand router.

Excellent product
Returned low quality product to upgrade to DR4. Very glad I did.

Just the Best!
After trying different brands this is the Cadillac of dovetail equipment. First test box was correct!

Excelllent Jig
The most important part of learning to use this jig, in my opinion, is firstly to concentrate on setting up your router correctly the base plate needs to be centered as does the guide bushing. Next thing is to study the video provided which really helps getting to know how to use the Jig. Following the instructions provided in the manual and stepping through each of the excersizes is easy. After that you are all set to go. If you buy the VRS Vacuum & Router support, and you need to buy a Router (as I did), make sure you do not buy a "D" handled one, it does not work well with the sliding wire guides on the Vacuum box.

Darn good quality tool.
It is rather spendy, but its hard to put a price on quality. This will last me for many years to come.

Spend the money and buy this.
Well, you get what you pay for. Pricey, yes, but well worth the money. The jig was easy to set up with excellent instructions and DVD. I didn't have any problems building the test box at all and have jumped into making drawers for a rolling storage chest for the shop. If you've never used a dovetail jig, I would expect there the be a bit of a learning curve only with learning how it all fits, but the instructions with the D4R are excellent and will get you through it. The unit itself, however, is incredibly easy to use. The dust collection system works great with a shop vac. It picks up about 95% of the waste. Very pleased. I will definitely be purchasing the box joint jig for my D4R. An excellent selection of bits comes with the accessory kit; very high quality. I highly recommend the Leigh D4R. You will be glad you bought it.

Great tool
Jig is well built and pretty easy to set up. There is a learning curve for sure, it will take a few projects to learn how to dial it in just right but well worth it. Start with some scrap wood and the number 8 bit, the manual is very helpful I read it before I even put the jig together which was very helpful

Good tool easy to use
I bought the D4R after having a really bad experience with it's competition. So far I've only made 5 drawers each with half blind and through dovetails. So far I've found the D4R fairly easy to learn although I haven't used all of it's capabilities yet. It's light weight and easy to move around the shop which is important for a jig this big. The only complaint I can give at this time is the dust port on the dust collection attachment could be better. The small adapter connects to a small hose but tends to clog up. I'm using a dust collector to provide the suction, if I were using a shop vac. it might not be a problem.

Easier to use than I thought!!!
After comparing the D4R to the competition, I bit the bullet. I read where the Leigh jig was hard to set up, hard to adjust and hard to fine tune. I was pleased to discover this was not the case. The D4R is also lean, without all the adjusting screws and depth gauges that make some of the other dovetail jigs look overwhelming. Using the adjustable guide fingers helps me visualize what the finished pins and tails will look like and spaced. The dust collector and support keep things clean and the router level. This was a good decision and I look forward to using the D4R on many projects. [...]

Easy if you have a PhD
The D4R is a remarkable joinery machine. Once you traverse the steep learning curve it's results are unparalleled. Don't let the promo videos fool you though - it takes some time to get proficient with the unit, and it is not quite as easy as the videos make it look. If you are willing to take the time to learn this machine, and don't mind sacrificing 'scrap' for test cuts, it's a great machine.

First Class Product!
Have used other "jigs" and this one is built great. Instructions are well written, without translations. Tech support is there when you need it.

Leigh D4R-PRO with Accessory Kit
Excellent dovetail jig, very flexible, learning curve is relatively short but expect a practice period before using on a project. The Vacuum & Router Support does a good job of collecting the dust and providing support. Very pleased with the purchase

magnificnet piece of machinery
Leigh produces absolutely marvelously designed machinery. The range of easy to use adjustments are wonderful. Once setup properly, dovetails are a snap. The dust collector/router support do an amazing job of reducing shavings. Once I start using my Porter Cable 890 (presently using my Bosch) with the dust collection handle I suspect there will be few if any escapees from my vac system. I also own the FMT mortising jig and love it!!

Amazing
This is an amazing tool. My first test box came out great. It took me at least 3 hours to assemble and 'get to know' the jig. I used to just rabbet my drawers together, so the dovetail concept is new to me. The jig seems very complicated at first. There is a lot of things a newbie has to learn about dovetailing. I can clearly see once I learn the concepts and adjustments, this jig will be a simple tool to use with very personal results. This tool will easily raise my future projects appeal, durability, and value. The price I paid to get this jig and a quality router will soon be forgotten.
