The bed is made from steel which allows the cast iron headstock to travel incredibly smoothly. Steel is the preferred material due to its well-known longevity and strength. Electronic variable speed is obtained via a VFD that converts 1 phase to 3 phase output so even at lower settings you will get an incredible amount of torque.
Changing from high to low setting is made easy on this lathe by using the quick release handle. The headstock and tailstock lock handles are situated on the back to eliminate any interruptions to your work flow. Ergonomically designed handles use a cam lock resulting in a firm feel with no deflection.

Happy with my decicison
Purchased my lathe from the Madison, WI store. This is my second lathe and I wanted something with which I could turn larger bowls and hollow forms. Very happy with the quality and performance of the lathe. Does everything I want it to do and more. I had an issue with a faulty switch and after contacting Laguna, they sent it out immediately. Excellent customer service from the manufacturer.
18/36 Laguna lathe
What a great machine. I couldn't be happier that I made this purchase. I have a midi lathe and I'm very pleased with it . But the 18/36 Laguna has unlimited possiblities. I did a lot of shopping around and I feel this machine offers the most for a great price.
Excellent lathe!!!! Worth every penny!!!!
I purchased the 18/36 about a month ago and I have to say this is an amazing piece of equipment. I've turned on the largest majority of higher-cost and reputable lathes and like many turners I've slowly stepped up in lathe quality as money will permit. However, all turners also know that lathes are like anything else: you get what you pay for. For the purpose of this review I'm only going to make breif comments about the higher-end competition to the Laguna 18/36 lathe as the review rules clearly state that other retailers and pricing references should be left out. Let's just say that professional turners and serious hobby turners tend to be attracted towards these higher-end brands. If you've done your homework and asked good questions, or happen to be a turner familiar with the competition, you know the brands I'm talking about. The Laguna 18/36 is literally half the money that many of the strong competitors will charge, but just as capable. In effort to plead my case, the Laguna 18/36 is worth every penny spent. I've turned everything from pens and bottle stopper tops to a large 16 inch bowl (that started with a 20 pound blank). Never once did deep bowl gouge cuts bog the 2hp 220V motor on the Laguna. The lathe is heavy enough that it won't walk (chatter) with large projects being chucked. The variable speed is extremely versatile. I thoroughly enjoy the lower-profile bed, especially considering I sit when I turn (and for shorter woodturners I think this is also ideal). The lathe comes nicely equipped and is ready to go after assembly. The motor is very quiet, even at high RPM. The control panel is nicely laid out and the digital RPM readout is easy to see (to the point that it will nicely light my two-garage woodshop when the lights are out). What I also appreciated is the president of Laguna himself responded to an email that I sent regarding the lathe. Laguna is easy to work with, backs their product, and is quick to answer questions. Because of this, and their quality, the Laguna reputation is quickly catching on between professional and serious hobby woodturners. Good luck in our endeavors if you're considering this lathe. Just do your homework and ask a lot of questions before making a purchase. Like I said before, this lathe is worth every penny but I'm also going to say it's a lot of lathe for the brand new turner.
