Unlike Western man-made stones, water rather than oil is used on Japanese stones to prevent the surface from being clogged with metal particles. We offer two classes of stone: coarse and finishing. The coarse stones are 250, 800, 1000, and 1200 grit. The 250 and 800 grit are faster cutting and used for repairing nicked edges or reshaping a bevel. The 1000 or 1200 grit stones are used for the first stage of the actual sharpening. Japanese waterstones are softer than Western styles causing a fresh, sharp surface to be continually exposed to the tool edge.

    Don't Store in Water

I left this in a container of water for a year and the 1,000 grit disintegrated a lot. I will try to get it back in shape with sandpaper. Just don't do as I did. Good stone other than that issue.

    My second 1K/6K combination stone

Excellent for maintenance of RAZOR sharp, mirror edges. Requires attention to detail to get it just right, but that's my therapy and I love it. Never a dull knife in my house. Works great on filet knives, as well; I use nothing else.

    Combination Waterstone 1000/6000

Excellent stone for knife sharpening. 1000 grit side provides fast and smooth cutting, while the 6000 grit side gives the fine polishing finish to the edge. The 1000 grit wears down faster, so a separate 1000 stone may be needed in the future - after a couple hundred uses or so. The stone is actually a King/Ice Bear Brand, which is a good japanese waterstone. Overall, a great value product and fast shipping service from Woodcraft. I would not hesitate to buy one of these again.

    easy razor edge

A great product. I, a novice sharpener, easly achieved a razor edge on my plane blades and chisels, English and Indian. Far out performed my oil stones, though they aren't anything special but for the price this water stone is a great alternative to expensive Arkansas stones. The 1000/6000 is a great combination to take a blade from start all the way to a great finish.

    Truly amazing

1000 side is a perfect transition to 6000 side. The stone's larger size makes it easy to maintain a perfect sharpening angle. This is a very fast and easy to use stone.

Don't judge a waterstone by its price

Magazine's writers always recommend expensive sharpening stones and jigs. In fact, one can have good results with cheaper and simpler methods

Great for use when honing straight razors! I recommend this stone very much! Works as good as a Norton, yet a fraction of the price! [...]
