Yes, heavy duty. But the joint is SO tight it's extremely difficult, not impossible, to set the compass quickly and accurately. I've tried oil and articulating to joint hundreds of times...still too tight. Some friction is desirable but this is nuts. And the scribe ("pointy end") needed sharpening. I cannot recommend.
Good for stock layout, not for drafting
I use this product to do curve layout on lumber stock. I had originally purchased it for drafting, however the tool didn't come with a sharp scribe and is too heavy to comfortably lay out curves on paper for plans. The weight is 7 ounces, and much too heavy for sustained use. I am pleased that it will hold my heavy HB lead mechanical pencil without any modification. I found that the knob that fixes this compass to a particular angle was a little awkward to use as it sits only 1/4" proud. As I said before the scribe leg of this compass was not sharp when it arrived. I took a mill file to it to create a useful point. This is a minor issue, but a must if you want to keep the tool from wandering out of a center point.
Very good tool. Solid, accurate and well made.
