Very Pleased
I received my vise yesterday after it had been back ordered. I had some concerns about the quality, specifically the jaw alignment and closure as well the fit and finish. I was extremely pleased to find a well made, robust vise in which the quality seems every bit the equal to the discontinued Record vises. I have a Record 52 and needed a larger opening vise. The quick release trigger was a bit stiff for my liking, but that was easily adjusted. The opening/closing action is a bit stiff when new, but with a little lube and some use it's loosening up nicely. It was nice to see that a true buttress thread was used on the screw as on the Record vises instead of an Acme thread. The jaws close perfectly with NO miss alignment. I'm a very happy camper.

A Pleasure to use
My 100-year old quick action vise was a dream, used it for over 40 years, but it's serrated teeth were now badly worn and cracked, and it would cost over $300 to mill new ones, so I shopped around for a replacement. It would be the Jorgenson or Eclipse after on a long search. Based on my reverence for Record (I have several planes), and a helpful conversation with a Woodcraft product support guy, I went for Eclipse, knowing that the lever activated quick release feature would be very different from the 1/2 back-turn of the vise handle (which I was accustomed to). It was out of stock online so I used Woodcraft's store inventory search and found one at a not to distant store, and they were happy to take my order over the phone and even gave a little discount when I asked for it. When the vise arrived I was dubious about the quick release lever - it was quite hard to turn. But I installed it anyway hoping that it would be acceptable once the vise was in its actual working position. No, it was not! I couldn't actuate the lever unless I dedicated one hand to it, and the other on the front jaw of the vise to pull and push it into position. After fretting that I had made a big mistake, I studied the spring mechanism and discovered that it could be easily adjusted, even after installation. After reducing the torque a little, I am very pleased to report that the vise works like a charm. The front of my bench was riddled with holes so I had to drill two new holes in the face of the rear jaw for long lags into the edge of the bench. Drilling the metal was easy. I attached wood faces with recesses for the heads of the lags. I used double sided tape to secure the wood faces. NOTE: the actual width of the vise is about 10 5/8".

Tough as Nails
I use this vise for professional cabinetmaking and general woodworking. It will probably last forever. I also have used a Record 52-1/2 on a different bench for 12 years. This vise is bigger and is just as well made. Before installing, I cleaned off much of the preservative oil that coated the parts by using mineral spirits and a soft cloth. I mounted the vise to my bench with a deep channel to hold the rear jaw, making a separate front hardwood jaw about 2-1/2" thick, 16" wide, and 5" high. So, the front jaw squeezes against the left front of the bench that I built up to match the jaw. The front jaw tapers, so you will need to shim the hardwood front jaw about 1/16" at its bottom to obtain a flat press against the bench. That's not a big deal for an experienced woodworker. I needed a temporary support from the floor and a helping hand to install the vise and insert the rear jaw into the channel that I had made to accept it. All went well with two people working together as a team. I do not recommend anyone taking this vise apart to make it easier to install it at the workbench. Directions are minimal. Read this review and others for help as needed.

Good, large vise
I was looking for a good vise for my new bench. I was tempted to buy a used Record vise, but they command higher prices for some in fair condition. Eclipse has imitated the Record style for their Chinese-made vises, and came up with an affordable vise with reasonable quality. It comes coated with a lot of grease that must be removed, lest it become clogged up with dust. This is easy to do with a rag and kerosene. It requires stout mounting screws and, most likely, a wood spacer that you may need to make yourself by laminating plywood, to mount it to the underside of a workbench. The process was straightforward. It will do best by having wood covers for the jaws. My inside jaw is the bench apron, whose underside was hollowed out to accommodate the depth of the inner jaw. The outside jaw is a full-thickness (about 1.5") piece of the same material, to allow me to drill dog holes if I decide to do that in the future, and for plenty of rigidity. Once mounted, I found the main screw does not turn with fingertip strength. This was also true before I removed the grease, so it isn't a matter of lubrication. I would have like it to be more free spinning, but this is not a big deal, especially when you consider that this is a quick release vise. The quick release mechanism works reliably. One squeeze, and the outer jaw moves in and out freely. I think I prefer this to the kind where you turn the handle a bit to disengage. One of the "safety" features is "Tommy bar will bend before the vise can become overstressed". I'm having a hard time imagining what the problem would be with overstressing it, especially when you consider that a bent tommy bar, which is irreplaceable in this design, ruins the vise anyway. I think this "feature" is simply a way of pretending a weak point in the design is actually an asset. I don't think it is. By the way, the vise is said to be 10 inches. It is in fact closer to 10.5" wide at the jaws. That half inch could make a difference in some applications, because you won't be trimming it to fit! The paint job is good and there was no rust at all. I think this vise is likely to last much longer than me. I'm happy with it, but I would have been happier if the main screw turned more easily. I shopped around, both used and new, and I think it's a good value for the price.
