Poorly Machined
The iron is not machined at the same radius as the plane body. Took quite a while to reshape and sharpen it. It still skips and digs in at any setting I tried.

Needs Honing
The last line on the package states(needs honing). Should have said (needs regrinding). Took quite a while to get the grind marks off and polished, then I realised the iron is not ground on the same radius as the plane. Big difference. I probably would have returned it had I noticed this before honing.

Awkward
Three things make this spoon plane difficult to work with. First, the blade is hollow-ground so it's hard to sharpening on a stone and strop (needs honing right out of the package). Second, the blade is a soft metal that requires substantial polishing to de-burr and it doesn't hold an edge (useless on seasoned hardwood). Third, size of the sweep is huge and not suitable for small items such as spoons or handles.

Make sure to inspect the product, around the throat. Blade fit, not so good.

My spoon plane is NOT made well.
I purchased this to use making love spoons, it is not a well made one. Apparently there are some good one going by the reviews. I'm well versed in mechanics and carving of such items but this tool just isn't made well. It has the slot offset to the top to bottom center axis of the spoon. The honing was no problem as I have a very good motorized honer that made the blade extremely sharp. But the back to the slot for the blade to protrude from, the left side of it is about 1/8" from left side of spoon and the right side of slot is double that distance from right side. This makes it impossible to align the blade except to cut on one side only which is the left 1/4" or so. Set blade to cut on right side and left is so deep in wood it cannot be moved. This is balsa wood. Obviously based on reviews here there are some of these that are cast well enough and other like mine are way off or out of alignment. It will be going back except I take exception to have to pay to ship something this bad back for refund.

issues
Wouldn't shave the hardwoods I was working in. Tended to skip and not smoothly cut. The blade was totally curved at a wrong radius, I had to reshape it and then sharpen. It works for me now, but only in softwoods.

carver's spoon plane
the screw not tight,and every time I use it the blade moves back.An allen screw may help ? but not sure, I hope the base will not break, from over tightening of screw!

Sweet tool!
For shallow hollowing out, or smoothing after using a curved adze, this tool cannot be beat. Just be sure to wear a glove ;)

Great for stip build canoe
I used it on the inside seams of a strip built canoe. Cedar is soft so it was plenti sharp and is the only tool that I could get into the area with. Worked as well as I hoped it would. Allows me better control than a scraper, able to cut nice smooth shaving off, just like a good plane.

Blade doesn't match profile of bed
The blade doesn't match the profile of the bed of the plane: it sticks out more toward the edges. I paid to have it sharpened too. I'll have to grind it down myself and resharpen it; not an easy task with a small blade and the curve. It also clogs easily and even has to have the blade loosened to clean it out sometimes. Too bad , because it could be a very useful tool. I have another palm plane that is curved front to back and not side to side that is very useful.

Not for the Novice
I am brand new to wood carving and decided to try carving a spoon as my first project. A Woodcraft employee recommended this product to me for carving out the bowl of the spoon, so I bought it. Because it comes unsharpened, I spent several hours just trying to figure out how to properly hone it. Many attempts with no success. A very frustrating product for a novice. No sharpening instructions on the product, and I haven't been able to find a demo on the Woodcraft website or anywhere else. I ended up having to buy a different tool to do the job.

Needs sharpening instructions
This convex blade comes unsharpened, and these blades are particularly difficult to sharpen. Although I have several books on the subject, there is very little guidance on how to do it properly - and without a well-sharpened blade, this is a useless tool.
