Ryoba nokogiri, master grade saws by Saw maker Shinsui Nakaya are handmade one saw at a time. Mr. Nakaya was apprenticed at age 15 to the famous seventh generation master saw maker Nakaya Inosuke. Each blade is hand-forged from Yasuki white steel. Mr. Nakaya explains that hand-forging compacts the molecular structure of the metal, making the blade tough and yet flexible. After forging, each blade is hand shaped using techniques that have not changed in nearly 400 years. He takes particular pride in his finishing and sharpening techniques, which require much time and skill. Mr. Nakaya relates that his saws are for professionals, and their cutting effect improves with use.
