Hand Tool Woodworking V

Part 1: Saturday, March 15, 9 AM - 5 PM

In this capstone course students will utilize the skills and techniques acquired from previous courses in order to construct their very own live edge or straight edge bench. Lumber will be selected by the students ahead of time to allow the instructor to complete the necessary prep work, but students will have their choice in choosing the species of the benchtop, legs, butterflies, and wedges. In addition to testing out their newly learned skills, students will also learn several new methods and techniques, including how to finish their bench. This is the terminal course in the Hand-Tool Woodworking series, which is aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete this course. While not required, it is recommended that students take Hand-Tool Woodworking I, II, III, & IV prior to this course.

Woodworking Fundamentals II

In the second part of our Woodworking Fundamentals series, students will receive hands-on practice with generating a cut-list, processing lumber, laying out and creating joinery, cutting tapered legs, assembling tables, and applying an oil finish (as time allows). Along with developing the foundational skills learned in Fundamentals I, the main focus of this class is on discussing pros and cons of several joinery methods, including pocket screws, dowels, dominos, and Mortise and Tenons. Students will be able to apply at least one of these methods to their Shaker End Table projects, and will leave with a better understanding of woodworking joinery and furniture construction techniques. PRE-REQUISITE: Woodworking Fundamentals I OR Table Saw/Jointer/Planer.

In the final part of our Woodworking Fundamentals series, students will spend two days learning about casework construction as they make a solid wood cabinet. New topics covered during this session include designing traditional casework, laying out and creating cabinet joinery, and making and fitting inset raised panel doors. Students will leave with a beautiful Shaker Wall Cabinet and a greater confidence to apply their skills to future woodworking projects. PRE-REQUISITES: Woodworking Fundamentals I & II.

Date Night: Plant Stand

Monday, March 24, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Bring your date to this class to make a Mid-Century Modern Plant Stand! Students will receive hands-on practice with creating domino and half-lap joinery, tapering and shaping legs, and preparing surfaces for finish. Each couple will leave with a completed plant stand as well as a ceramic pot!

A couple who takes this course will get the chance to turn a pair of pens under the tutelage of one our pen-turning experts. Each student will prep, turn, finish, and assemble his/her own pen.

Wood Turning Fundamentals III - Spindle Turning

In the third part of our Wood Turning Fundamentals series, students will develop their turning skills as they discuss and practice a variety of different cuts including roughing, beads, coves, and pommels. A portion of the class will also be devoted to improving sharpening skills and understanding the proper use of additional turning chisels and gouges. Students will receive excellent hands-on instruction as they complete a spindle project such as a wooden egg, flower stem pot, and a spin top. PRE-REQUISITE: Wood Turning Fundamentals I & II.

The class will begin with a discussion about lathe safety and terminology, the importance of sharpening, selecting the appropriate turning tools, and understanding the use of chucks and accessories. Students will then get several hours of hands-on practice learning fundamental tool techniques as they turn a small bowl project.

Often disregarded for the sake of time in today’s fast-paced world, hand-tool woodworking is a dying craft. Only since the industrial revolution has the convenience of machinery made woodworking “easier.” Hand-tools are a tranquil way to connect with tradition and make something truly unique that is the product of your own elbow grease. Yes, some aspects may take longer than using power-tools, however, that is not a bad thing. Work is good for the soul and infinitely rewarding. Throughout our hand-tool courses, skills will never be sacrificed for the sake of convenience. The tools and techniques taught have been utilized for thousands of years. In this beginner class, students will learn to fundamental skills needed in hand-tool woodworking: planing, sawing, chopping, and paring. Learn from a third-generation woodworker and take home your own Gottshall Block. This small project will give students the skills to confidently make advanced woodworking projects by hand. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course.

Kitchen Cabinetmaking 101: Boxes and Frames

Take our Kitchen Cabinetmaking Series to gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to tackle your upcoming cabinet projects! While the focus of this series is on kitchen cabinetmaking, the techniques you’ll learn can easily be applied to many types of cabinetry including bathroom vanities, closets, mudrooms, built-ins, and more. In the first part of this series, students will spend 12+ hours of class time learning about the cabinetmaking process as they build two cabinets to take home. Topics covered include: creating a cut list, processing sheets of plywood, creating case joinery, applying edge banding, drilling shelf pin holes, and making and attaching face frames. Students will complete two cabinet boxes: a base cabinet sized to fit common benchtop tools, and a wall cabinet that can be used for utility or shop storage. Any extra time at the end of the class can be used for preparing surfaces for finish and/or discussing kitchen layout ideas. Students registered for future sessions of this series can choose to leave their cabinets onsite.

Our Date Night at the Wood Shop series is designed to give couples a chance to spend an evening together making a fun project and lasting memories! All of these sessions are priced per couple, so you only need to register for one spot. In this particular session, couples will make a bread board and a bread knife. These utensils will be a bright spot on any table you share with friends or family. We will complete each project with a food safe finish.

Hand Tool Woodworking II

In this class students will learn how to make their own carving mallet to use on chisels and gauges. The benefit to using a brass mallet as opposed to a larger wooden mallet is immediately noticeable. The range of motion is significantly reduced by simply letting the weight of the mallet do the work. Less effort is exerted, and in turn, one doesn’t fatigue as quickly. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course. While not required, it is recommended that students take Hand-Tool Woodworking I prior to this course.

Kitchen Cabinetmaking 102: Dovetailed Drawers

In the second part of this series, students will receive hands-on practice creating dovetailed drawers. Intro to Spoon Carving

Spoon carving is a fun, almost anywhere/anytime carving activity. Learn to select material for carving, rough out your blank, avoid injury, deal with tricky grain issues and how to finish your new spoon. Pen Turning 102: Making Resin Casted Pen Blanks

Learn how to make your own pen blanks using epoxy in this class! Students will learn the basics of using epoxy resin as they're guided through the process of creating their own blanks. In this class students will learn how to make their own spokeshave. As the name suggests, this tool’s original purpose was to shape the spokes on a wheel. Every tool must earn its place in a toolbox or on a pegboard. Few tools earn a spot as easily as a reliable, comfortable, shop-made tool. Students will learn a variety of skills by the completion of this class, including of course, how to use their new tool. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course. Sharpening skills are essential for the woodturner. Let us show you how to maintain a sharp edge on your turning tools. We will have the the Wolverine Sharpening Jig by Oneway and the Sorby Pro-Edge set up to use. We will show you how to use either of these to properly sharpen your turning tools: gouges, scrapers & skews will be covered in depth. Each Student may bring 2 Turning Tools that need sharpening.

In this class students will learn how to make a butterfly joint completely by hand. Also called a bowtie, Dutchman, or Nakashima (after the late master), this method of joinery is as elegant as it is strong. Used to strengthen a weak area of a board (i.e. cracks, knots, or even join two pieces together), a butterfly is a reliable way to stabilize your project while adding a touch of flair and skill. Kitchen Cabinetmaking 104: Making Custom Trim

Wednesday, April 30, 1 PM - 4 PM

Take this class to learn how to make your own trim to match your cabinet or furniture projects! Topics covered include how to make toe kick skin, scribe material, light rail, and layered crown molding. Students will then get the opportunity to make two piece crown molding and a countertop for their cabinets. Note: while this can be taken as a standalone course, the dimensions of the crown molding and countertop are sized for the cabinets made in this series, and no alterations will be allowed.

In the fifth part of our Kitchen Cabinetmaking series, students will learn about the application of different types of colorants and finishes. Topics covered include: preparing the surface for finishing; selecting stains, paints, and finishes; applying selected finishes; and troubleshooting common finishing issues. Students who have taken the previous cabinetmaking classes will be able to apply at least two coats of finish on their cabinets.

In this session, students will receive hands-on practice with the final steps of the kitchen cabinetmaking process. Topics covered include: installing and adjusting doors and drawers, attaching pulls and knobs, and installing kitchen cabinets and trim. Students who completed the KC104: Making Custom Trim class will then be guided through the process of attaching layered crown molding on their wall cabinets, installing a countertop and casters on their base cabinets, and attaching knobs and pulls (brought from home or purchased during the class).

Intro to Marquetry and Inlay

Marquetry is an art form of woodworking that has been around for centuries. It involves cutting thin veneers by hand which are later inlayed into a woodworking piece of furniture parts. Marquetry is as the French called it, "Painting with wood". This class teaches the fundamental aspects of doing marquetry for your own projects. This course covers resawing veneers, creating patera packets, hand cutting techniques, sand shading, glue ups, and demonstrating inlaying your marquetry piece into wood.

Oil Finishing By Hand

More than an afterthought, more than simply preservation and protection, finishing is THE step that takes you from project to masterpiece. There is no better compliment to a fine functioning piece of woodwork than a deep, rich oil finish that is also easy to maintain. In this class, students will learn how hand rubbed oil finishes enhance both the beauty and livelihood of wood, a brief history of finishing, demonstrations of several brands and types of finishes, and the student will leave with a hardwood trivet (or cutting board?) with one coat of the finish of their choice and the know-how not only to keep it beautiful, but also to nourish the beauty as the years go by. Woodwork only gets more beautiful over time when hand rubbed oil finishes are used.

Students will build on the skills learned in our Kitchen Cabinetmaking 101 class by constructing a high end, furniture grade linen cabinet that measures 24"W x 72"H x 17"D. The cabinet will incorporate features typically found in high end custom kitchens and techniques that require an elevated attention to detail: beaded face frames; divided panel, inset-mounted doors; dovetailed drawers with undermount soft close drawer slides; and custom made cove molding. As time allows, students will also get the opportunity to spray sealers and finishes on their cabinet components prior to the final installation of doors, drawers, and trim. NOTE: this class will be limited to a maximum of four students and an additional follow-up session may be added at no extra charge to the students (pending instructor approval). OPTIONAL UPGRADE: Students can choose to use Cherry instead of Ambrosia Maple for a $100 upgrade fee (must be paid for at the time of registration; please call the store for more info).

Basic Box Making 101

This class will introduce you to the skills necessary for making a basic box. You will build and leave with a basic small box suitable for a trinket, keepsake or gift. The box will use mitered corners, a contained bottom and lid. The lid will be cut from the box and attached via inset box hinges.

The benefit to using a brass mallet as opposed to a larger wooden mallet is immediately noticeable. The range of motion is significantly reduced by simply letting the weight of the mallet do the work. Less effort is exerted, and in turn, one doesn’t fatigue as quickly. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course. Take our Kitchen Cabinetmaking Series to gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to tackle your upcoming cabinet projects! While the focus of this series is on kitchen cabinetmaking, the techniques you’ll learn can easily be applied to many types of cabinetry including bathroom vanities, closets, mudrooms, built-ins, and more. In the first part of this series, students will spend 12+ hours of class time learning about the cabinetmaking process as they build two cabinets to take home. Students will complete two cabinet boxes: a base cabinet sized to fit common benchtop tools, and a wall cabinet that can be used for utility or shop storage. In this capstone course students will utilize the skills and techniques acquired from previous courses in order to construct their very own live edge or straight edge bench. In addition to testing out their newly learned skills, students will also learn several new methods and techniques, including how to finish their bench. More than an afterthought, more than simply preservation and protection, finishing is THE step that takes you from project to masterpiece. There is no better compliment to a fine functioning piece of woodwork than a deep, rich oil finish that is also easy to maintain. In this class, students will learn how hand rubbed oil finishes enhance both the beauty and livelihood of wood, a brief history of finishing, demonstrations of several brands and types of finishes, and the student will leave with a hardwood trivet (or cutting board?) with one coat of the finish of their choice and the know-how not only to keep it beautiful, but also to nourish the beauty as the years go by. Woodwork only gets more beautiful over time when hand rubbed oil finishes are used.

Marquetry is an art form of woodworking that has been around for centuries. It involves cutting thin veneers by hand which are later inlayed into a woodworking piece of furniture parts. Marquetry is as the French called it, "Painting with wood". This class teaches the fundamental aspects of doing marquetry for your own projects. This course covers resawing veneers, creating patera packets, hand cutting techniques, sand shading, glue ups, and demonstrating inlaying your marquetry piece into wood.

Knife Making 101

Hand Tool Woodworking IV

In this class students will learn how to make a butterfly joint completely by hand. Also called a bowtie, Dutchman, or Nakashima (after the late master), this method of joinery is as elegant as it is strong. Used to strengthen a weak area of a board (i.e. cracks, knots, or even join two pieces together), a butterfly is a reliable way to stabilize your project while adding a touch of flair and skill. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently Complete the capstone course. While not required, it is recommended that students take Hand-Tool Woodworking I, II, & III prior to this course.

Build a Windsor Stool

The Windsor stool originated in England in the early 18th century. It is characterized by its turned legs, spindles, and seat. Windsor stools were originally made from local hardwoods, such as ash, maple, and oak. Often used as work stools, they are stylish, comfortable and durable. In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of Windsor style furniture making through its simplest form, the Windsor stool. Discussion topics will include splitting, handling, and storing green wood along with drying techniques and technologies. The hands-on portion will focus on stool design, shaving and shaping parts, joinery, assembly and finishing. By the end of the 3rd day, you will have your own handmade stool to take home, as well as the knowledge and skills to continue exploring Windsor furniture building in your own shop or makerspace. Building a Windsor stool is a great way to learn about traditional woodworking techniques. It is also a satisfying project that will give you a sense of accomplishment. If you are interested in learning how to build furniture, a Windsor stool is a great place to start!

Table Saw Basics

Students will be able to apply at least one of these methods to their Shaker End Table projects, and will leave with a better understanding of woodworking joinery and furniture construction techniques. Oil Finishing By Hand

More than an afterthought, more than simply preservation and protection, finishing is THE step that takes you from project to masterpiece. There is no better compliment to a fine functioning piece of woodwork than a deep, rich oil finish that is also easy to maintain. In this class, students will learn how hand rubbed oil finishes enhance both the beauty and livelihood of wood, a brief history of finishing, demonstrations of several brands and types of finishes, and the student will leave with a hardwood trivet (or cutting board?) with one coat of the finish of their choice and the know-how not only to keep it beautiful, but also to nourish the beauty as the years go by. Woodwork only gets more beautiful over time when hand rubbed oil finishes are used.

Finishing with Rubio Monocoat

History of rubio, woodchoice, preparation, water-popping, application of the oil, use of Rubio Precolor stains, deciding on degree of luster and how to increase it, mixing of Precolor stains AND mixing of the Monocoat Oil 2C to achieve the exact colors you’re looking for. Knowing how to expertly repair Rubio Monocoat finish when the dreaded accident happens. We will also review the Rubio Monocoat system and how their products work together for excellence in finishing. Sharpening skills are essential for the woodturner. Let us show you how to maintain a sharp edge on your turning tools. We will have the the Wolverine Sharpening Jig by Oneway and the Sorby Pro-Edge set up to use. We will show you how to use either of these to properly sharpen your turning tools: gouges, scrapers & skews will be covered in depth. Each Student may bring 2 Turning Tools that need sharpening.

Intro to Spoon Carving

Often disregarded for the sake of time in today’s fast-paced world, hand-tool woodworking is a dying craft. Only since the industrial revolution has the convenience of machinery made woodworking “easier.” Hand-tools are a tranquil way to connect with tradition and make something truly unique that is the product of your own elbow grease. Yes, some aspects may take longer than using power-tools, however, that is not a bad thing. Work is good for the soul and infinitely rewarding. Throughout our hand-tool courses, skills will never be sacrificed for the sake of convenience. The tools and techniques taught have been utilized for thousands of years. In this beginner class, students will learn to fundamental skills needed in hand-tool woodworking: planing, sawing, chopping, and paring. Learn from a third-generation woodworker and take home your own Gottshall Block. This small project will give students the skills to confidently make advanced woodworking projects by hand. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course.

Kitchen Cabinetmaking 101: Boxes and Frames

Take our Kitchen Cabinetmaking Series to gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to tackle your upcoming cabinet projects! While the focus of this series is on kitchen cabinetmaking, the techniques you’ll learn can easily be applied to many types of cabinetry including bathroom vanities, closets, mudrooms, built-ins, and more. In the first part of this series, students will spend 12+ hours of class time learning about the cabinetmaking process as they build two cabinets to take home. Topics covered include: creating a cut list, processing sheets of plywood, creating case joinery, applying edge banding, drilling shelf pin holes, and making and attaching face frames. Students will complete two cabinet boxes: a base cabinet sized to fit common benchtop tools, and a wall cabinet that can be used for utility or shop storage. Any extra time at the end of the class can be used for preparing surfaces for finish and/or discussing kitchen layout ideas. Students registered for future sessions of this series can choose to leave their cabinets onsite.

In this class students will learn how to make their own carving mallet to use on chisels and gauges. The benefit to using a brass mallet as opposed to a larger wooden mallet is immediately noticeable. The range of motion is significantly reduced by simply letting the weight of the mallet do the work. Less effort is exerted, and in turn, one doesn’t fatigue as quickly. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course. While not required, it is recommended that students take Hand-Tool Woodworking I prior to this course.

Kitchen Cabinetmaking 102: Dovetailed Drawers

In the second part of this series, students will receive hands-on practice creating dovetailed drawers. Basic Box Making 101

This class will introduce you to the skills necessary for making a basic box. You will build and leave with a basic small box suitable for a trinket, keepsake or gift. The box will use mitered corners, a contained bottom and lid. The lid will be cut from the box and attached via inset box hinges.

Kitchen Cabinetmaking 104: Making Custom Trim

Take this class to learn how to make your own trim to match your cabinet or furniture projects! Topics covered include how to make toe kick skin, scribe material, light rail, and layered crown molding. Students will then get the opportunity to make two piece crown molding and a countertop for their cabinets. Note: while this can be taken as a standalone course, the dimensions of the crown molding and countertop are sized for the cabinets made in this series, and no alterations will be allowed.

In the fifth part of our Kitchen Cabinetmaking series, students will learn about the application of different types of paints and finishes. Topics covered include: preparing the surface for finishing; selecting stains, paints, and finishes; applying selected finishes; and troubleshooting common finishing issues. Students who have taken the previous cabinetmaking classes will be able to apply at least one coat of finish on their cabinets.

Kitchen Cabinetmaking 106: Installing Cabinets and Trim

In this session, students will receive hands-on practice with the final steps of the kitchen cabinetmaking process. Topics covered include: installing and adjusting doors and drawers, attaching pulls and knobs, and installing kitchen cabinets and trim. Students who completed the KC104: Making Custom Trim class will then be guided through the process of attaching layered crown molding on their wall cabinets, installing a countertop and casters on their base cabinets, and attaching knobs and pulls (brought from home or purchased during the class).

Intro to Marquetry and Inlay

Marquetry is an art form of woodworking that has been around for centuries. It involves cutting thin veneers by hand which are later inlayed into a woodworking piece of furniture parts. Marquetry is as the French called it, "Painting with wood". This class teaches the fundamental aspects of doing marquetry for your own projects. This course covers resawing veneers, creating patera packets, hand cutting techniques, sand shading, glue ups, and demonstrating inlaying your marquetry piece into wood.

In this class students will learn how to make their own spokeshave. As the name suggests, this tool’s original purpose was to shape the spokes on a wheel. Every tool must earn its place in a toolbox or on a pegboard. Few tools earn a spot as easily as a reliable, comfortable, shop-made tool. Students will learn a variety of skills by the completion of this class, including of course, how to use their new tool. This course is part of a sequential program aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete the capstone course. In this capstone course students will utilize the skills and techniques acquired from previous courses in order to construct their very own live edge or straight edge bench. Lumber will be selected by the students ahead of time to allow the instructor to complete the necessary prep work, but students will have their choice in choosing the species of the benchtop, legs, butterflies, and wedges. In addition to testing out their newly learned skills, students will also learn several new methods and techniques, including how to finish their bench. This is the terminal course in the Hand-Tool Woodworking series, which is aimed to build upon previous lessons with the goal of acquiring the necessary skills to confidently complete this course. While not required, it is recommended that students take Hand-Tool Woodworking I, II, III, & IV prior to this course.

This class is designed for beginners who want to learn how to safely use the core tools of the wood shop. During the first half of the class, we will focus on how to properly flatten and size lumber using the table saw, jointer, and planer. Once the material is flat and square, we will discuss glue up methods as we join the material to create a cutting board. The second half of the class will focus on safely using the router and router table to shape the board and apply a decorative edge. Students will leave with a completed project and a great foundation for starting their woodworking journey!

Oil Finishing By Hand

More than an afterthought, more than simply preservation and protection, finishing is THE step that takes you from project to masterpiece. There is no better compliment to a fine functioning piece of woodwork than a deep, rich oil finish that is also easy to maintain. In this class, students will learn how hand rubbed oil finishes enhance both the beauty and livelihood of wood, a brief history of finishing, demonstrations of several brands and types of finishes, and the student will leave with a hardwood trivet (or cutting board?) with one coat of the finish of their choice and the know-how not only to keep it beautiful, but also to nourish the beauty as the years go by. Woodwork only gets more beautiful over time when hand rubbed oil finishes are used.

In the second part of our Woodworking Fundamentals series, students will receive hands-on practice with generating a cut-list, processing lumber, laying out and creating joinery, cutting tapered legs, assembling tables, and applying an oil finish (as time allows). Along with developing the foundational skills learned in Fundamentals I, the main focus of this class is on discussing pros and cons of several joinery methods, including pocket screws, dowels, dominos, and Mortise and Tenons. Students will be able to apply at least one of these methods to their Shaker End Table projects, and will leave with a better understanding of woodworking joinery and furniture construction techniques. PRE-REQUISITE: Woodworking Fundamentals I OR Table Saw/Jointer/Planer.

Everything will be covered! History of rubio, woodchoice, preparation, water-popping, application of the oil, use of Rubio Precolor stains, deciding on degree of luster and how to increase it, mixing of Precolor stains AND mixing of the Monocoat Oil 2C to achieve the exact colors you’re looking for. Knowing how to expertly repair Rubio Monocoat finish when the dreaded accident happens. We will also review the Rubio Monocoat system and how their products work together for excellence in finishing. At the end of the class, you’ll be able to layout your finishing project and plan each and every step you will need to complete to finish a beautiful project your friends will envy.

INTRO TO PEN TURNING

Students will learn the proper steps to make a pen, from cutting and turning to finishing and final assembly. Each student will turn a pen to take home to show friends and family members. CAUTION: Pen Turning can be very addictive! This class may be cancelled if there are fewer than 3 students.

Basic Box Making 101

Saturday, December 20, 9 AM - 5 PM

This class will introduce you to the skills necessary for making a basic box. You will build and leave with a basic small box suitable for a trinket, keepsake or gift. The box will use mitered corners, a contained bottom and lid. The lid will be cut from the box and attached via inset box hinges.

Intro to Traditional Carving

Woodcarving is one of the oldest specialized trades in the world. Carving has changed the styles and designs of furniture making and woodworking for millennia. This class will cover the basic fundamentals of traditional woodcarving which includes safety, carving tool education, how to sharpen tools, design and layout, low relief carvings and efficient techniques.
