Woodpeckers DelVe Square, now at Woodcraft, Item #132231, was developed over the years by North Carolina woodworker Tom DelVecchio.  He continually improved and added more functionality to his shop-made versions until it became the patent pending design marvel it is today.  Beginning with prototypes from a western Pennsylvania etching machinist, early designs were two part construction in one flat plane.  His initial idea was to have a tool similar to a speed square that was not cumbersome on small part usage.

Various methods may be used in cutting a blood groove or juice channel in a cutting board.  Here is one way it can be done.  This cutting board was created with some exotic woods about 6 years ago and found in an attic.  At the time there were no handles or blood grooves cut into the board.   It found it’s way to my desk after handles were added with a request to add a juice channel for meat cutting.  It was decided to add the channel on one side only, leaving the opposite side for vegetable cutting use.

Paulownia wood is available from time to time at your local Woodcraft store and online at Woodcraft.com.  Paulownia was named after Queen Anna Pavlovna of Russia (1795-1865), is sometimes called Royal Paulownia or Princess Tree, and is known in Japanese as Kiri.  In Japan it is customary to plant a Paulownia tree when a baby girl is born and then to make it into a dresser as a wedding present when she marries.  Paulownia seeds were originally used as packing material for shipments from Japan, and have spread prolifically across the U.S.  blooming annually.
