Creative people are discovering the fun in using resin to create turning blanks, item encapsulations, bowls, river tables and more. To meet their project needs, Woodcraft continues to expand its line of resins and related products – and to encourage these makers Woodcraft will be sponsoring a contest in March.
A $250 Woodcraft Gift Card may be waiting for you – if you create a showstopping ring, pen, handle, river table or something else made with resin or a combo like resin with burl.
From March 1 through March 31, Woodcraft will accept online entries for “Pour to Win” – a competition to see who can imagine and then create a unique piece made by an original resin pour that will please the Woodcraft judges and the public. Learn more here!
Despite the limitations of sponsoring a nationwide
event during the coronavirus pandemic, Turn for Troops volunteers and Woodcraft store
personnel rallied in 2020 to turn enough wooden pens for military personnel to comfortably pass
the 200,000 overall mark.
Renowned turner, Keith Lackner creates a Salt and Pepper Mill Matching Set with Woodcraft's WoodRiver pre-drilled mill kits. Making a salt/pepper mill is an enjoyable project that produces a useful kitchen tool or a great “anytime” gift! The biggest obstacle to making a salt/pepper mill of any size is drilling the stepped through hole. We’ve solved the problem by pre-drilling our most popular salt/pepper mill blanks in walnut, cherry, maple, mahogany, and padauk. Follow along to learn how Keith takes us through his step-by-step process.
Creating gifts from the heart has never been easier with WoodRiver® Ornament Kits for woodturning. Decorate your tree with handmade ornaments or give them as special gifts to cherish year after year. The design possibilities are endless, with three options for the kits and a multitude of turning materials available. Select the kit style, add a wood, acrylic or mixed turning blank, and get busy!
Woodcraft will sponsor its 17th Turn for Troops National Turn-a-Thon on November 7 and 8 and is asking volunteers to continue supporting those on active military duty or recovering from injuries by making handcrafted wood pens – at either a retail store event or at home for submission to Woodcraft.
In 2019, volunteers turned 15,385 one-of-a-kind pens for a 16-year
total of 190,609 pens. Woodcraft’s goal this year is at least 200,000 pens and
hopefully many more.
Like most woodworking projects, before you can get to the final result, prep work and jigs play an important role, before the actual turning process begins. The biggest attribute to lathe turning is that finished results can typically be attained faster with almost instant gratification. This WoodRiver Pen Drilling Vise with 7mm Drill Guide & Stop Collar combo aids in that process for the prep work, especially for the novice turner, or those who may not have a drill press to begin the wood turning creative adventure.
Volunteers of all ages and skill levels handcrafted 15,385 unique wood pens in 2019 for the Woodcraft Turn for Troops program that sends the pens to military personnel on active duty or recovering from injuries. The total of pens turned since this program began 16 years ago is 190,609.
