August 7 Meeting
Woodworking with Kids
The August 7 meet is "Woodworking with Kids."
Hear ideas for working with kids in the shop.
Working with kids presentations:
- Shawn Graham talks about teaching kids at his woodworking school, wortheffort.
- Curtis Turner talks about woodworking with his kids.
- Brandon Berdoll shows us pictures and videos of his son at his sawmill.
- Mark Wells (me) talks about a wooden boat he built with his son.
- Gene Berry on “Fitting Cabinets in a Submarine”
- John Huber reviews some books on box making.
Don't forget your show-and-tell.
You are welcome to bring your well-behaved children to the club meeting. I suggest kids who are at least 8 or 9. We will have a couple of kids there as part of the presentations. The format will be similar to our regular meeting. You judge if that's something that would interest the young person in your life.
Kids can teach us a lot, so if you are an adult with no kids, come on. I'm pretty sure there will be something for you at this meeting.
ENDS MONDAY 7/28: Shawn's school is moving from San Marcos to Austin. He is raising money for the move by selling handmade wooden tools and gifts. Details here:
Texas Furniture Makers' Show application deadline is September 2. http://www.texasfurnituremakersshow.com/
I think this is going to be a great meeting. If you need additional encouragement, you get a 10% discount at Woodcraft the night of the meeting.
I look forward to seeing you at Woodcraft on Thursday, August 7 from 7:00-9:00pm!

|Description: Join Pete as he walks you through the steps to make your own three dimensional Texas Star. In this class you will create your rustic Star using a Table saw, Sliding Miter saw, Router and Router table to complete multiple compound miter cuts. A Biscuit joiner and Brad nailer will be used to assemble approximately 20 pieces of wood. The Star will have two levels. The center Star will be made out of Texas Mesquite and the second level border is your choice of either Ambrosia Maple or rough sawn cedar (fence pickets will work) for a very rustic look. Due to the complexity and time constraints of this project, Pete (instructor) will complete all possible prep work prior to class. Students will be responsible for completing any staining and finishing at home. This is a popular offering at Woodcraft so sign up early to ensure your reservation.
|Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Woodworking.
|Please Note: Fees are nonrefundable within one week of the scheduled seminar.
