This class is designed to introduce the novice turner to the wood lathe. Gerry will take you step by step through machine set-up, tool safety and usage. In this class, students will learn basic tool techniques and turning cuts used to complete a functional wooden lidded Box. Sharpening will be briefly covered. In this class, you’ll shape and assemble the key components, understand how airflow and reed behavior affect sound, and finish your call with durable, good-looking detailing. Whether you’re building your first call or refining skills from a previous project, you’ll leave with a functional duck call and the knowledge to adjust tone, response, and pitch as you practice in the field. You’ll cover: Basic duck call anatomy (components and how they work together) Measuring, fitting, and preparing parts for a clean build Tuning concepts: how changes influence tone and responsiveness Assembly and finishing steps Testing, troubleshooting, and dialing in your sound Class format: guided instruction with individual work time (materials required to be purchased before class: 1-1.5x1.5x12 turning blank of you choosing, 1-accent band, 1-duck call kit, 1-tooling kit #159364 and 1-lanyard #159365).
