Product Information:

Model 50-142
Rikon introduces a new benchtop combination sander to its lineup. Powerful 1/3 HP totally enclosed fan cooled motor spins the 8" disc at 1,725 RPM and the 1" x 42" belt at 3,000 SFPM for fast stock removal. This unit offers two large cast-iron tables with miter slots. Both tables tilt 0-45º. The belt table tilts for chisel sharpening. Removable belt plate allows sanding of curves or odd-shaped material. The solid steel base utilizes rubber feet and strong cast-iron frame for minimal vibration and maximum rigidity. Includes two 2" dust ports.

Heavy cast iron, but low quality

    Comments about Rikon 1" x 42" Belt x 8" Disc Sander :

I wanted heavy cast iron, and this product has it. However, it is poorly designed and there is no evidence of quality control in the manufacture. The plastic covers do not fit correctly and I had to modify both. One took a half hour to install. The adjustable handle for the belt tilt table stripped out after just a few uses and now I have to use a wrench to change the tilt angle. There are 2 separate dust ports, which is not very convenient. On the other hand, the motor works and unit is stable. Recommended, but with reservations.

    Comments about Rikon 1" x 42" Belt x 8" Disc Sander :

Can't afford anything better. Biggest problem is stamped steel base. Made mounting and aligning everything else a real chore. Had to shim belt sander casting to get it vertical and for belt pulleys to align properly. Tensioning the belt is a real pain. Had to use bar clamps to hold things in position before I could tighten bolts. There are two dust collection ports so you'll have to get creative to hook 'em both up. They are on opposite sides of the base. Machined surfaces are rough at best. Quality control was nowhere in sight when they built this. Even nuts and washers to hold plastic side cover on were the wrong size. And then there's three hex keys with no holder you need to find a place for. The machine is heavy and fairly quiet so it's not gonna walk off the bench. If you're willing to put the time in to put it together properly by using trial and error, and you don't have to change angle settings on tables too often, it'll probably be a good work horse for you. I haven't owned it long enough or used it enough to rate it's reliability but if you have the money, do yourself a favor. Do your homework and buy a better tool. It's so poorly designed and made that I don't understand why WC even puts it on the shelf.

    Comments about Rikon 1" x 42" Belt x 8" Disc Sander :

This sander does not live up to Woodcraft standers. I had to remove motor to make adjustments to cast iron guard for disk had to sand disk to fit shaft on motor. I am sure some have had good experiences with this sander, miter gauge was missing which is minor compared to other issues. I sent it back in pieces hopefully others will have better luck.
