Product Information:

Create a beautiful bowl, pepper mill, platter, candlestick and base, or whatever your imagination will allow, with these gorgeous Claro Walnut pieces. • Working properties are similar to black walnut
• Works well with hand and power tools
• Good strength and bending properties
• Takes finishes well"Claro" is a Spanish word meaning clear or bright, and the common name "claro walnut" is usually used to refer to the wood cut from the lower bole (stump) of orchard walnut trees, especially on the West coast of the US. These trees are a mixture of species, created by grafting an English walnut (Juglans regia) scion to a rootstock of one of our native walnut species, either black walnut (Juglans nigra) or California walnut (Juglans hindsii). The wood near the graft tends to be variegated in color, with beautiful marble-like, dark brown and tan swirls in the figure.

Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Thin Stock. The thin stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

Carving and Turning Blocks. Blocks are sawn to +/- ¼" of size listed.

Plywood. Sizes are nominal. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

Comments about Claro Walnut Burl 3" x 6" x 6" :

I bought 4 pieces of this with one of the four being very light weight and the others pretty heavy. Being new to turning, I thought the heavy pieces were just more solid and the lighter one was probably garbage. I turned the light one first into a very nice small bowl. The grain is amazing! The next one found me wondering why my arms were soaked with wet wood chips(now I know the light one was just drier). I have found that with this wood, you may have to dry it at some point. I turned the next 3 into rough bowls, filled them with their own wood chips, wrapped them in paper bags and they are drying rather quickly from what I can tell (1 week so far and almost ready to finish IMO). ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE EFFORT! Each one is like an Easter Egg with a surprise inside!

Comments about Claro Walnut Burl 3" x 6" x 6" :

I bought this to use to make custom knife handles for myself and my family. I have worked with Black Walnut before and found it to be very nice for this application. I thought the Clario Burl would look even better. The wood is green enough that when you cut it you can smell the sap and feel the moisture. It cuts well with a saw but trying to cut it with rotary tools is a nightmare. I am kind of sorry I spent the money on this wood. I just hope that I can make it work for the one knife I already have it epoxied to.

Wood products need to be kiln dried

About Me Professional

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Beautiful grain

Cons

  • Warps cracks

Best Uses

  • Unsuitable for use

Comments about Claro Walnut Burl 3" x 6" x 6" :

The grain is beautiful, but the wood is so green that it actually sweats water after the wax is removed. After wood is cut is warps and cracks as it dries. Too bad such beautiful wood is so careressly being cut and sold with out the proper kiln drying so necessary to stabilize it.

Comments about Claro Walnut Burl 3" x 6" x 6" :

Like any burl it can be delicate in some places, the wood Claro walnut(Juglans Hindsii)is very commonly used in making Stringed Instruments like gutiars and mandolins, both for it's beauty as well as its Tone. It is also widely used for custom Rifle Stocks because of the beautful figuring it can have especially down towards the roots, and also its good recoil resistence and absorbtion. What I am fixing to use this wood for is to make a custom turned Cow Elk Game Call for a client of mine, i have looked at several calls made from Claro walnut and they definatly stood out from the rest so i'm excited to see how it turns out...
